Flashback
Definition: a scene set in a time earlier than the main story
Sentence: Flashback are used in tv shows to show a story the relates to the actually story.
Example: "Remember when we first moved into this house."
Foreshadowing
Definition: a hint about what is going to happen later in a story
Sentence: In the Scarlet ibis the scarlet ibis foreshadows what eventually happens to Doodle.
Example: The Scarlet Ibis
Euphemism
Sentence: Euphemisms are put in place of a mean word.
Example: People are not poor they'e just economically disadvantaged.
Symbolism
Sentence: A 3 leaf clover is a symbol because it represents the Irish.
Example: 3 leaf clover
Imagery
Sentence: Imagery is reading something and actually feeling, hearing, tasting, seeing, or smelling it.
Example: The taste of the cold ice cream with hot chocolate sauce spread all over your tastebuds with deliciousness. This makes you taste the ice cream with chocolate sauce.
Mood
Definition: the way that the reader feels throughout the story
Sentence: When I read The Scarlet Ibis my mood becomes sad because Doodle dies in the end.
Example: being sad is a mood
Structure
Definition: The way in which the author organizes a piece of literature
Sentence: The author structures this story well.
Example: Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
Inference
Definition: a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning
Sentence: I made and inference when I decided Mrs. Shears was upset about her doting dying when she came outside cussing in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.
Example: "I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain." I infer he is upset because he is crying and his brother has just died.
Connotation
Definition: an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning
Sentence: Childish is a connotation is makes someone feel immature.
Example: Crippled or handicap can give off a negative connotation
Denotation
Definition: the dictionary definition or literal meaning of a word
Sentence: Denotation tells what the a word means>
Example: Red-of a color at the end of the spectrum next to orange and opposite violet, as of blood, fire, or rubies
