September 2022 Sunspot
Sunset Hill
Just a reminder about drop off!
Students should be dropped off at the door. If a student needs help finding their classroom, the staff member posted at the door will be able to assist them. This way we make sure only approved people enter the building.
If you would like to volunteer, please reach out to the office and your student's teacher. All volunteers entering the building will have to sign in at the front desk and receive a yellow guest sticker.
We thank you for helping us keep our little eagles safe!

School Safety Drills at Sunset Hill
Here at Sunset Hill we practice Emergency Drills every month. In August, we conducted a Fire Drill. Students exited the building quickly and lined up quietly. They did an amazing job!
In Sept, we will be conducting a Tornado Drill. Students will learn where we go in the event of a tornado.
In Oct, we will be conducting a Safety Crisis Drill. Teachers will go over this drill with students prior to us conducting it.
Our goal with these drills is to be prepared in the event of an emergency. We want both our students and staff to feel empowered by knowing what they need to do to get themselves and other to safety. Teachers and Staff are always available during Drills to help students, as well as answer any questions they may have about the procedures.

Hello Sunset Families!
I am so excited to be the Library Media Specialist at Sunset Hill! I am in my 11th year of teaching and 7th year with Lawrence Public Schools. I was previously the Library Media Specialist at Pinckney Elementary for 6 years.
A new school year and a new Library Media Specialist bring about a few changes to our Sunset Hill Library. Each class will visit the Library once a week for a Library lesson where they will also get the opportunity to check out books. The following is the check out and overdue book process that we will be utilizing this year:
Students may check out two books when they visit the Library.
They can have the books checked out for 2 weeks before the books are considered overdue.
Once the books are overdue, the process will be as follows:
1-14 Days Overdue: Classroom teachers will receive a list of books that students in their class have overdue by 1-14 days each Friday.
15-28 Days Overdue: Students will receive an individual notice to take home of the books that they have overdue by 15-28 days each Friday.
29-59 Days Overdue: Families will receive an individualized email of the books that their student(s) has overdue. Emails will be sent on Fridays.
60 or More Days Overdue: Once books are overdue by 60 days they are considered lost. The replacement cost of the book may be added to the student’s Powerschool account. A bill will be mailed to the family of the student to notify them that a fee has been added to their Powerschool account.
Lawrence Public Schools does not charge for overdue books unless the book is overdue by 60 days or more. The book is then considered lost as indicated above.
Damaged books may also require payment for the cost to replace the book.
Thank you for welcoming me into your school and community. I am looking forward to getting to know all of our students and families at Sunset Hill! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
