The Wonders of the Electromagnet
By Danielle Parker
What is an Electromagnet?
An Electromagnet... is a type of magnetic field produced by an electric current
- How does It work? An electromagnet works because an electric current produces a magnetic field. The magnetic field produced by an electric current forms circles around the electric current
- Where did it come From? Danish scientist Hans Cristian O. discovered in 1820 that electric currents create magnetic field and British scientist William Sturgeon invented the electromagnet in 1824. His first electromagnet was a horseshoe-shaped piece of iron that was wrapped with about 18 turns of bare copper wire.
