October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
For the second year, the HBCSD Board Members passed a resolution to recognize Dyslexia Awareness Month in October. HBCSD is continuing to raise awareness through sharing information on the website, Constant Contact notifications at the school site, professional development for staff, and the West Orange County Consortium for Special Education Community Advisory Committee.
The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) provides the following definition of dyslexia, which was adopted by the United States National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development:
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
Below is a link to the new California Dyslexia Guidelines prepared by the California Department of Education in August 2017. This is a rich source of information including describing dyslexia, assessment, and best practices to support students that are struggling with dyslexia.

Attendance Reminders
More and more research is showing the link between attendance rates, chronic absenteeism and academic performance. Across the country, more than 7 million students are missing so many days of school that they become academically at risk. The average number of absences per school year for a child is 5 days. Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two every few weeks. Chronic absenteeism is missing 10 percent of the school year at any point in the year and can cause children to fall behind in school. This gap continues to grow as children experience chronic absenteeism over the course of several years. Additionally, absences can affect the whole classroom, especially as our classrooms create lessons and projects that promote collaboration. Attending school regularly helps children feel connected to school, their peers, and their learning. Developing the habit of showing up every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work.
As cold and flu season approaches, some good habits to stay healthy are:
- wash hands often- use soap and water to wash your hands
- cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow
- stay home when sick to prevent spreading germs. Please review the HBCSD Guidelines for Student Illness Procedures to help you decide when and if your child is too sick to go to school (attached).
- avoid close contact with people who are sick
- avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
