May 2019 Newsletter
College Hills Elementary PTO
Dear College Hills Parents & Guardians,
WOW, where has our time gone? Less than four weeks left of school, yet we have so many more great activities left before we are out for summer. Please make sure to see the calendar below or our calendar on the College Hills website. Be looking for information at the end of the school year for our summer reading program that we will host during the month of June. This was started last summer and the students who came enjoyed the time at school with their parents reading great books!
As we close this year out I would like to take a moment to thank our PTO for everything they do for CHE families, students and staff. The College Hills PTO takes time every year to raise money, so that all our students go on field trips, receive a school shirt, get new equipment on the playground and in the classroom all for free to the students and their families. The PTO also gives recognition to the campus staff by providing meals, snacks, birthday cup cakes, school shirts and teacher grants all free to the staff. The PTO puts on great events like our annual Paw Print festival for families to enjoy and come together as a school family. This is just a little of what our PTO at College Hills does every year. I appreciate all that they do. Take a moment to thank a PTO parent for making everything happen! If you would like to give a little time each year as well to be apart of this exemplary group, you can register with our PTO. We would love to have you join.
I would also like for all our parents and students to join me next week to show appreciation to our school teachers for the dedication that they give every child at College Hills. It takes a lot of work and a lot of love to make all the magic of learning come alive every day. I can say that the active learning can be seen every day across the campus helping your children grow into well rounded young men and women. The PTO has a list below with something to do everyday of the week for our teachers. Choose one or choose them all. It is a blessing to remind a teacher why they do, what they do!
Lastly, THANK YOU for sharing your child with us at CHE. They are apart of our family and we love having them here every day!
Have a Tigerific Day!

Simple and Sweet Ways to Show Love to Staff
Personalized Staff Appreciation
If you'd like to personalize any appreciation to a staff member, you can look to see what some of their favorite things or treats may be at chpto.org/staff There you may learn how you can spoil them individually, but it is also a great page to share with the kids to help them to get to know and appreciate our amazing staff such as where they lived when they were the kids' age.
Bounce into a Great Book!
Coming up during the End of School Award Days will be an Usbourne Book Fair. This is the perfect opportunity to stock up on truly special books to get the children excited about summer reading! Books can also be a great option for families looking for an ideal and educational reward for the year's academic achievements. Proceeds from this event will purchase a classroom set of laptops for the library to support students in conducting research. We need families' help to meet our sales goal!
The book fair will be open:
Tues, 5/21 from 7:30 a.m. - noon.
Wed, 5/22 from 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Thurs, 5/23 from 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Have you tried the pick-up line lately?
The city of College Station is working hard with schools to keep school commute traffic on school pavement rather than on city streets (especially the new River Bend--y'all will have to try out their winding pick-up lane!) This policy is for the safety of children, but also to ensure that safety personnel have a clear path in the event of an emergency at any time of day. Our older neighborhood has narrower streets and parking on Gilchrist is a frequent concern for unexpected door openings, limited visibility for (short) pedestrians and for the mobility of buses and fire trucks.
Gilchrist Dr is increasingly used as an improvised parent pick-up. This is discouraged and, more recently, has become a ticket-able offense. The availability of staff members to escort children out to meet parents is limited and this service should only be used by the dozen or so students per grade that walk to their homes nearby. Those who drive in to pick up their children should not park along Gilchrist and are strongly encouraged to utilize the safer and efficient curbside service at the front of the school where staff can utilize the building to help maintain doable ratios and provide your children with air conditioning should you be delayed.
