Cuba played a major role in the start of the Spanish American war. The USS Maine was docked in Havana Cuba's port when it suddenly exploded. America thought the Spanish had something to do with it so they invaded.
Teddy Roosevelt
Teddy Roosevelt was the leader of the rough riders during the Battle of San Juan Hill. He pushed hard for American involvement in the Cuban independence. He was an outdoorsman and he founded Yellowstone National Park.
Rough Riders
The rough riders were first led by Colonel Leonard Wood, the Teddy Roosevelt took over. Teddy led them into their first battle, the Battle of San Juan Hill, which they won. The rough riders were made up mostly of college athletes, cowboys, ranchers, miners, and other outdoorsmen.
