Parkhill Primary School
Issue 27, Thursday September 5 2019
Dear Parents/Carers
What a day!! Swimming carnival was just awesome and the children did themselves and us proud! I would like to thank everyone for their support and help on the day particularly Jo Ravida who organises the event schedule and paperwork; which is a huge job!
I would also like to thank all of the parents and volunteers who came along on Monday and helped with the Library Working Bee – we were able to cull all of the old pre 2000 non-fiction texts which is amazing! You will have seen boxes of books outside of the RBH – you are more than welcome to come and take what you want.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING:
What is play? Play is children’s language, children’s work and children’s relaxation. Children need to play for healthy development. Children’s play belongs to children. It is for all children, all ages from babyhood on, and all abilities. Children decide what to play and how to play. Play is their time to be free and to enjoy. Play can be pretending, learning a new skill, dressing up, being active or being quiet. Play can be with other children or alone. Adults can join in if they are invited, in fact young children often love best to play with parents, but children make the rules (except rules for safety).
Developing children’s social and emotional skills through play:
Play is a way children can express their feelings even before they have the words to say how they feel.
In play children are in charge of what they do. Being in control in play helps them to learn to manage their feelings.
When children make or build things in their play, they are building skills and confidence in themselves.
In play children learn about the give and take of relationships with their friends. They learn to lead and follow and to care for others.
Play helps children to think about what they want to do, to plan and to be patient.
SLEEP AND MOOD:
As with a healthy diet, sleep is a critical part of a child’s health – both physical and emotional. We all know that a sleep-deprived child can be a whirlwind of behaviours. Children who come to school tired find it so difficult to concentrate on their learning. Not only is class time more challenging, but so are their social interactions. Taking turns becomes harder, compromise feels impossible and managing conflict is just too hard. Children can become easily frustrated when they are over tired. As adults we are able to identify in ourselves that the reason we feel grumpy is because we are tired – children don’t always have this ability and cannot always connect tiredness to mood. There is a lot of helpful information about the importance of sleep, and managing those bedtime challenges that we all encounter.
‘just 5 more minutes mum…’
‘one more turn…’
‘I need a drink!’
‘I’m hungry’
‘my tummy hurts’
‘I need to tell you something…’
I’m sure you all have the same list!
The sites below offer some helpful advice and tips for those of us who are struggling with bedtime!!
http://sleepforkids.org/html/cant.html
The National Sleep Foundation recommends the following amounts of sleep – I have to say I had a little giggle to myself when I read this!!!
Newborn (0-3 months) — 14-17 hours
Babies (4-11 months) — 12-15 hours
Children (1-2 years) — 11-14 hours
Preschool (3-5 years) — 10-13 hours
School Age (6-13 years) — 9-11 hours
Teens (14-17 years) — 8-10 hours
Youth (18-25 years) — 7-9 hours
Adults (26-64 years) — 7-9 hours
How do you fare?
BUILDING WORKS:
We have successfully appointed our architect. The plan is to redevelop the RBH – including the toilets (eventually). We have given a small brief to the group which included the following:
Keep the science kitchen as is, the stage and music rooms, everything needs to be accessible, toilet facilities, durable (commercial) kitchen in the hall
Fittings and fixtures, straightforward systems eg electricity and lighting, heating and cooling, ventilation
Provision for maintenance of building - consideration for the future of the building
Need the storage facilities as is… if not more
Need to keep hirers and not interrupt their access to building
Provision of a full-sized basketball court, possible avenue for revenue, we don’t have enough space at the moment to fit everyone in for whole-school events
The hall building could extend out the front into the car park and into the playground area – but not into the garden or areas with established trees etc.
Solar panels and sustainability where possible throughout the build
The materials palette must be in keeping with our most recent building works to ensure the campus has a sense of connection.
In a nutshell we are looking to keep everything that is currently there as well as growing the space to incorporate a basketball court. If you have any other ideas or thoughts regarding the work please drop me an email so we can consider every voice.

OTHER:
Footy Colours Day:
The last day of term will be our Footy Colours Day!! We finish at 2:30pm on this day!
Toys at school
We would like your help in discouraging children from bringing lots of precious toys to school. Often children bring a favourite toy and it stays in their bag, or something for show and tell or to play with at recess/lunch. These toys are ok for children to bring to school – but please do discourage them from bringing precious things to school. At school things can get broken and lost and children become quite distressed and unable to focus on their day if this happens.
Dental Van:
Please return your dental van visit form if you wish for your child to visit the dentist – the forms are due back on 16th September.
Please do check out the calendar dates below for the terms events.
Have a wonderful weekend.

S.T.E.A.M 2/3M
The S.T.E.A.M activity for 2/3 M this week sprung from our reading of the book ‘The All New Must Have Orange 430’ by Michael Speechley.
The students used a variety of materials to create some weird and wonderful creations that looked great but were totally useless: just like the Orange 430.
Writing in 2/3M
This week in writing we had a challenge to look at a picture and to craft some sentences about what we saw.
We had to imagine that we were there, so it was written in the first person. We also had to use at least 3 adjectives and try to include the word enormous.
Here are some of our work samples:
I was woken up by a big shaft of light. We looked up in shock at each other. We all walked over to the window, super curious to see what was there.
By Lucy
Flash! I bolted upright as a bright light filled the room. “What was that I whispered” to my sisters who were already awake. “Let’s go” exclaimed one of my sisters excitedly.
By Benji
I woke up as I casually walked over to the broken, cracked open window. As I woke up my sleepy sisters and stared at them. I glanced over to the window to see an enormous, glowing egg shaped moon.

Hats!
It is September! All months of the year with an “R” in the name are the months that students must wear HATS.
Children are not allowed to play outside, and must stay in the shade if they do not have a hat.
If you require a new hat for your child, you can purchase one from our Uniform Shop. The Uniform Shop is open on Thursdays from 8:30am—10:00am.
Uniform orders with payment can be dropped at the office and Sam will have items delivered to your child/ren’s classrooms.
Choir Connections
Term 3 Choir Performance is this Friday 6th September at 3pm. We look forward to seeing many family and friends of the choir at assembly.
Marinda & Kirsten
Writing competition.
Attention all Parkhill writers!
Dymocks and Pan Macmillan are inviting Australian kids to get creative and enter a story writing competition that’s judged by the one and only Andy Griffiths! To celebrate the release of The 117-Storey Treehouse, we’re calling all Andy fans to knock our socks off with their imaginative short stories. The theme is "if you could add one level to Andy & Terry's treehouse, what would it be?". Competition is open to Australian primary school students. Word limit is 400 words. Competition closes 30 September 2019. For more information and to register your entry visit the Dymocks website: https://www.dymocks.com.au/promotions/andy-griffiths-kids-writing-competition
