January Intensives: A Huge Success!
A huge thanks to our staff to make this happen!
Dear Brooklyn Collaborative Lower Grades Families,
January intensives--an EL Education structure--are a vital part of our lower grade experience.
After a semester of hard work that culminated in PBATS, final projects, and other summative assessments, students transitioned to intensives and immersed themselves in a topic of their choice.
Students engaged in fieldwork, practiced hands-on learning, met with experts in the field, and showcased their work--all in the span of 3 days!
They animated the classrooms with their curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, verbal eloquence, courage, persistence, passion, compassion, and laughter! Kudos to our students for high level engagement in the January intensives!
Our deepest appreciation and gratitude to our teachers who planned and designed such high quality intensives that challenged and engaged our students! Our January intensives require an incredible amount of time, collaboration, and intellectual and creative energy on the part of the teachers.. A major shout out to them and other staff, including our paraprofessionals and support team, who worked to make our winter intensives a success!
Below is a brief description of each intensive and photos that capture the pride and ownership of our students.

Project Runway with Rytva
Urban Hiking with Josh
Students hiked through Clay Pits Ponds in Staten Island, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and along the Brooklyn Bridge Park waterfront - pausing to journal, solo, and reflect. This intensive was not for the faint of heart. Students hiked outside in January
Water Bottles with Tom
Students completed an entire science experiment in 2 1/2 days. They formed a hypothesis related to Newtonian physics and built plastic water bottle cars that were powered by the air from balloons!
Designing Public Spaces with Candice and Liz
This intensive tapped into students' interest in architecture, designing, and building all sorts of things. Students went out and experienced some of New York's best Public Spaces. They visited plazas and played in parks. Students then collaborated to design their own ideal public spaces and built scale models of those spaces.
Masks Around the World with June
Students visited the ANHM to study the use of masks in cultures around the world. They then created papier mache masks of their own and painted them
Setting You Up for Success with Brandon
Students conducted research on debate topics that centered around hot button issues in schools---particularly at BCS. They got a taste of what being a journalist is like. They surveyed BCS students and teachers to gather data to support their claims with survey and text evidence. Students also got a good practice in both literacy and math skills.
