Wednesday April 19th, 2023
Panther families,
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful sunshine as much as we are! It has been so lovely to get outside and soak up some Vitamin D!
I have some GREAT news! Penngrove In Motion is BACK! Starting on Monday 4/24, we will be shaking our groove thang first thing in the morning on Mondays and Fridays at the very start of school as long as we have the stage! Come join us to boogie down and start your day with a smile!
Our Evacuation Drill went really well. We got a lot of really good feedback from our observers. The very first thing they had to say was what a dedicated staff we have! (But, we already knew that!). They gave us lots of feedback as to ways to improve, so we will continue to practice, practice, practice!
Please be aware that students are not allowed to bring items from home to play with during recesses. If their teacher approves of it, they may bring items to play with during class scheduled free-time, but we are having some issues at school--wide breaks. Thank you for your understanding!
Did you know PCS has a health and wellness site? Check it out to find resources for all things health: from mental to physical and beyond.
Stay awkward, brave and kind!

Question of the week from Principal Harp
HELP US GET MORE THAN 10 RESPONSES THIS WEEK!!
Each week, I will be sending out a question with which you will be given the opportunity to engage in a new conversation with your child. We all know how hard it is to draw out responses other than, "nothing" or "fine" when we ask "What did you do today?" or "How was school?" Be sure to use open ended follow-up questions and statements such as "Tell me more about that!" or "What did you think of that?" Please ask your student(s) the question below, share their response with us and make our day! You can submit more than one response! (No need to put names or identifying words.)
Out of the 5 days of the school week, which day is your favorite and why?

Preventative Measures at Penngrove:
There are many layers of prevention for undesired behaviors. These are done school-wide, class-wide and on an individual basis.
School:
-stating, reviewing and practicing our expected behaviors from our Matrix.
-Passing our PAW awards like crazy when we see expected behaviors with targeted praise
Class:
-Community Circles
-Tool Box lessons (this gives kids ways to deal with problems)
-Kimochis (learning about expressing feelings)
-Zones of Regulation (this is being used a bit here and here, but is on the radar to increase useage)
Individual:
-Behavior contracts
-Check in Check Out- this is a student specific system with 3 goals which meet the needs of that student. They have an additional adult on campus who is their cheerleader in the morning, reminding them of their goals, and setting the prize for the day, and doing a positive chat at the end of the day.
-Scheduled breaks during the day
-Unscheduled breaks as needed
-Additional mental health supports with a counselor
-Increased communication with families.

I will be joined by county transportation officials from the Public Infrastructure Department as well as staff from the GHD Consulting, which is conducting a Penngrove area traffic study. The county initiated the traffic study to identify potential improvements that address congestion, mobility, safety and regional growth.
The County is committed to finding solutions that respond to community concerns about traffic and safety on roadways in and around Penngrove. Community engagement is key to this process so that community members and stakeholders have an opportunity to share concerns, be informed and provide comments.

Upcoming Event: Parent "Emotional Resiliency" Workshop & Connection Circle - Monday, April 24th
Petaluma City Schools has partnered with the Society for Social Health & Well-Being to offer a monthly series of Social-Emotional Health Workshops and Parent Discussion Groups to provide more support, opportunities to grow & connect as parents (with each other) and foster a greater sense of community. Each month we will have a theme to be discussed and professionally facilitated discussion and support on areas such as:
- Managing the Screen & Digital Well-being or
- Fostering Health Social Connections for Kids (and us parents)
- New Communication Tools to engage your kids in ways they want to connect
- Addressing Mental and Emotional Health Challenges Head on
We will be joined by a local expert to provide educational material, hands-on practice and then open discussion groups and support circles for parents to share their challenges and their triumphs so we can all learn and grow together.
This is a wonderful way for you as a parent to become more emotionally equipped to support your children (and yourselves), feel supported by other PCS parents, and begin to grow a community of parents you can connect with for years to come!
