A Message From Mrs. Pass
Things are in full swing now as we and our students are back into the groove. One thing I have mentioned I will be able to do now is get into your classrooms more with the collaborative walk-though tool and give you feedback! Remember, the tool was designed based on what we and our stakeholders felt good instruction looks like. When I send you the feedback, please remember that I am only in your room for a short period of time, and I know that I am not going to see all of those things in one 10-15 minute window, even though some of them are certainly embedded into your lesson. Focus on what I was able to see during that window, and know that I will be back and will see different aspects of the lesson during walk-throughs. My goal is to collect data to see where we are strong as a school and where we may be able to grow in our instruction. Teaching is a tough job, and sometimes, due to the nature of the job, you can feel like a silo in your classroom. My goal with walk-throughs is also to help you recognize and celebrate your strengths and give you small pieces of actionable feedback to help feed the hunger each of you have for growth and to improve the effectiveness of each instructional minute. The biggest impact on student learning is clear, sound and effective instruction!
One way that we are also helping students learn is through our Tier 3 RTI team! This team supports our teachers by helping fill the gaps for students who are at least one full grade-level behind in Reading or Math. Our school has a focus on early literacy with the goal that ALL students are reading on grade-level by the end of third grade. Our RTI team, along with our primary teachers, are working hard to ensure this goal. One of the biggest things in our toolbelt is the instructional method of Orton Gillingham. We use this method of instruction to work on fluency with our emerging and beginning readers. Mrs. Carothers, Mrs. Fedders and Mrs. Rice each take small groups of students and walk students through an approach on recognizing letters, sounds and blends. I thought I would share one of the approaches I observed in case it helps you in your work with a student.
1. say the word
2. have the student say the word
3. build the word with tiles
4. tap the tile and say the sound the letter makes (tap and say)
5. say it faster (blending)
6. what is the vowel
7. is there a tricky letter? Why is that a tricky letter?
8. read the word out loud
9. spell the word
The teacher is taking notes on where specifically the student is struggling and where the student is excelling. I have attached a few videos of this work if you are interested in seeing it in action. Of course, these videos are strictly for our staff as they do have students in them. Please do not attempt to share this video link with anyone outside of our staff.
Let's have a great week together!
