Arts Magnet Weekly News
Week 33 for Families and Community April 18-22, 2022
Dear Eliot Arts Magnet Families,
Happy Easter, Passover or blessed Ramadan to you! However you spend your Sunday, I hope it is wonderful, peaceful and healthy.
We have a lot of wonderful things to celebrate about this last week and the next few weeks coming up!
Saturday we had a fantastic parent work day and our fourth Design Team meeting. Thank you to all who showed up despite it being a holiday weekend.
Wednesday is Open House but it will be a virtual padlet that families may sign into at their leisure. School will be dismissed on Wednesday at 11:45 am.
Our annual Science Fest is coming up on Saturday, April 23 between 12:00 - 4:00 pm! We are so grateful to Dr. Warren Skidmore, former Eliot parent, and his amazing team for all their hard work and planning. We are in need of waters and other drinks for that day. If you'd like to help out, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0e4aa9ac2ca6f49-water
Our 8th graders had an incredible trip to our nation's capitol. Check out this short video of our with our awesome 8th grade History teacher, Mr. Michael Riley! https://youtu.be/cZNj2QC0_Xc
Last Thursday, we hosted very well attended in person tours on both campuses and on Friday our AAM fifth graders were treated to an incredible day at Eliot Arts. We know parents have choices for middle school and we sincerely hope you choose #Eliotartsmagnet
ASB Applications are out! Any rising 7-8 grader who wishes to serve on student government to help lead our school is welcome to apply. Please see Ms. Ericka Moore or a current ASB member for an application.
The Jungle Book is Coming! Our first K-8 spring musical collaboration is coming up April 28-30! Tickets go on sale this week. Please see a cast member to purchase a ticket. Online ticketing will open soon. Tickets are $10 pre-sale and $15 at the door. Parents often ask me how students may be involved who are not on stage. We've had students designing and building sets, costumes and our backdrops for projection. We will have students backstage and in front of house during show times and next year we will find even more ways for students who are not ready to be onstage to be involved.
It's a great week to be an Eliot Husky!!
Yours in Service,
Dr. Scheckel, Principal

April is Arts Month!
April is Arts Month! Chair Holly J. Mitchell and Supervisor Sheila Kuehl authored a motion to recognize the role of arts and culture in healing and recovery from COVID-19, and to continue the County’s work of ensuring that all the benefits of, and opportunities provided by, the arts are available and accessible to all residents, no matter who they are or where they live. The motion encourages all County departments to promote the arts this April.
Los Angeles County’s creative ecosystem is one of the most vibrant in the world—with arts nonprofits, businesses, artists, and creative workers collaborating in performing arts, design, film and screen industries, arts education, visual and literary arts. The County has invested meaningfully in arts and culture for more than a century, from grants for small and mid-sized arts nonprofits to large County-owned cultural venues. But there is more work to do to expand equity and access. The Countywide Cultural Policy is an exciting new part of this work—it will help us go further in using the arts to improve service delivery for residents, support our economy, promote wellbeing, and strengthen our communities.
To celebrate Arts Month, we have made a few artworks available to download as desktop wallpapers or video conference backgrounds (for programs such as Skype and Zoom). The artworks on this page represent only a small portion of the full Los Angeles County Civic Art Collection. To learn more, click on the artwork you wish to read about or visit the County Collection to explore more art! We also encourage you to check out the great Arts Month resources from Arts for LA.
New Testing and Tracing Protocols
Due to the low transmission rate we are currently experiencing, PUSD will begin moving from surveillance testing to response testing AND move from individual contact tracing to group tracing after Spring Break.
Response Testing
Surveillance testing began in order to monitor the presence of COVID-19 cases at each school site through the mobile testing clinics at schools every week. Response testing means that with low transmission rates, PUSD mobile testing clinics will close and the testing teams will act in response to positive COVID-19 cases. If a student or staff member tests positive and has been at school while infectious, the testing team will respond to the school site and support those who might have been exposed. (See Group Contact Tracing description below.)
Free PCR and rapid antigen COVID tests will continue to be available at the PUSD Ed Center for students and employees. Primary Health Clinic hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Testing takes place in the parking lot off of Oak Knoll Ave. on Mondays and in the parking lot off of Del Mar Blvd. on Tuesdays - Fridays. No appointment is required.
Group Contact Tracing
School Compliance Teams have been implementing Individual Contact Tracing to identify close contacts who were exposed to an individual who was COVID-19 positive during their infectious period. After we return from Spring Break, School Compliance Teams will move to Group Contact Tracing which means they will notify groups of potentially exposed students who were in a shared indoor airspace with an individual who was COVID-19 positive during their infectious period.
All students, regardless of vaccination status, who are considered to be potential close contacts or could have been exposed, will receive an at-home rapid antigen test kit and a notification letter. These students, the potential close contacts, can remain at school and participate in school activities provided they meet the following criteria:
- Remain asymptomatic
- Test at least once 3 - 5 days after the exposure and report the results through the PUSD Group Tracing Survey found at https://www.pusd.us/Page/9801
Potential close contacts will not be required to quarantine provided they test negative 3 - 5 days after exposure and are asymptomatic.
PUSD Testing Teams will be redeployed to support school sites whenever there is a positive case and an exposure has occurred at a school. They will assist students who are potential close contacts and be available to assist parents in reporting test results.
