Pilgrim Wax Museum
Third graders in Mrs. Johnston's and Ms. Drew’s classrooms will be busy learning and preparing for Thanksgiving in a different way. Over the next few weeks, these students will be integrating their Social Studies into all other areas of the curriculum. Applying the knowledge they will gain through their Social Studies unit, the students will create their own retelling of history through a Wax Museum.
The children are investigating the First Thanksgiving using books, articles, and websites on the first Thanksgiving story. Kids will work in cooperative groups across the grade level based on interests they have shared. They will work together to write a script for their topic as well as create a backdrop for their presentation. On Monday, November 25th and Tuesday, November 26th, we will be performing our retelling of the first Thanksgiving for K-5 classrooms. There will be a special third grade parent presentation on Tuesday, November 26th at 11:55 a.m. We are ending the unit of study with a Thanksgiving feast for our students and parents. The children will be able to enjoy this learning experience and have the opportunity to practice a lifelong skill - working as a team!!

We hear the word bullying frequently. What is bullying? The definition of bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school- aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.
Bullying involves an imbalance of power between the bully and the victim, is intentionally harmful and occurs repetitively. (Olweus et al., 1999)
For example, if your child comes home and tells you that another child called them a name, ask them… did you tell them to STOP? Did you walk away? If the child continued after those two steps, did you report it to a teacher? These steps usually work when the children remember to use them. If the child stopped the behavior and never repeats it again, that is an unkind act. If the child continues to call your child that name (repetitive) even when your child used these strategies, then we are dealing with bullying and you or your child should report this to a teacher right away. Please do not assume that the teacher knows about what is going on, we emphasize to students the importance of reporting (self- advocacy) any acts of bullying to an adult right away.
In our 4th grade SEL classes here at Stone Bank we are currently in the middle of our anti-bullying unit. We just finished reading the Weird Series, which is a three book series about overcoming bullying in school. 4th grade has learned about being a bystander and the power of standing up for others when we can. They have also learned that sticking together and not participating in bullying can stop it immediately. Most importantly, they learned that the adults in the school want to know about bullying behaviors so that we can intervene and help the students work through the situation.
This interesting article was shared with me and I am planning to share it with some of my students during SEL class. I also wanted to share it with parents, as it a great conversation piece and a great way to teach kids to stand up against bullies. Be a Broken Soda Machine Enjoy.
