Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this levy needed?
85% of the district’s budget is spent on employee costs. Passing this levy will allow us to keep great teachers and support staff working with students every day. Great communities need great schools, and great schools need great teachers.
What has the school district done to reduce cost?
In the 9 years since the last operating levy was passed, the district has reduced the number of administrative positions, eliminated teaching positions, given 0% salary increases to teachers and administrators and increased health care costs to employees. And even with the passage of this levy, we will continue to look for ways to reduce costs and stretch tax payer dollars as far as possible.
What will happen if this levy does not pass?
Several things will happen. First, the district will be forced to reduce spending in additional ways including the reduction of 20-25 teaching positions prior to the 2017-18 school year. Second, the district will be back on the ballot in May of 2017 asking for 6.8 mills. Third, transportation will remain at state minimum standards.
Why will the amount of the levy go up if it’s back on the ballot next year?
In order to start collecting more tax dollars in January 2017 we must pass this levy now. If the levy does not pass until next year we won’t see any increase in revenue until January 2018. If we go another year without this increase, we just dig ourselves deeper into debt. So we would need more money from taxpayers to bring us back into line with expenses. We can pay a moderate amount now, or a larger amount later. But we have to pay something if we want full services and strong experiences for our kids.
I don’t understand what “5.5 mills” means. If the levy passes how much will it cost me, and how long will it last?
We are asking for a 5-year 5.5 mill operating levy. Passing will bring about $2 million to the district each year for five years. This will cost the owner of $100,000 home just $16.04 per month. And at the end of the five years, voters will have the chance to decide whether they want to renew their support of this levy.
What will the money be spent on?
The first thing this money will be spent on will be to bring back transportation in the district. The rest of the money will be spent on providing services and support to our students and day-to-day operating expenses.
If the levy does pass, when will the district start bussing students again?
The district has a plan in place to bring transportation back to students in the district in January 2017.
