East and West Elementary STEM Newsletter

East Elementary

This month, 2nd and 3rd-graders are given challenges based on the book, "Iggy Peck, Architect". They were challenged to create a bridge with their partner to support a toy car. The bridge had to be at least 15cm tall. This was very challenging for some kiddos! We had to learn how to properly use a ruler and measure the distance from the table to the top of the bridge.

West Elementary

This month 4th and 5th-graders are given challenges based on storybooks.

4th Grade

4th graders read the book "The Day the Crayons Quit". After reading the book they were challenged to create a crayon box out of LEGOs. They were given only one crayon as a reference to create a box that had a capacity of 24 crayons the stood up on their own. They also learned about the volume of their box.

5th Grade

5th graders read the book, "We're All Wonders". After reading the book they learned about levers, fulcrum, load, and effort. They were challenged to construct a catapult and measure the distance after three different trials. They then compared their challenges with 4 different fulcrums to see how the size affected the distance of their astronaut.
