Biology
Ready to start off Q2 with something new? Canvas “Scales” have been in a student friendly format for every standard in both Q1 and Q2 in the form of a “Quiz” that you can assign to students and have them self-assess their understanding of the standard and concept.
Water and Macromolecules start off the quarter so plan to use the POGIL, CPALMS and lab as the trifecta of lessons for those units. Unit documents are in the Canvas Biology course as well as the curriculum guide in SharePoint.

Required Instruction: Veterans Day ~ Wednesday, November 11, 2020
In 1919, when first celebrated as Armistice Day, the day marked the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918. The purpose of Armistice Day was to honor the fallen soldiers of The Great War for their sacrifice and bravery. Seven years later, Congress adopted a resolution requesting President Coolidge issue annual proclamations on November 11, making Armistice Day a legal holiday.
On June 1, 1954 Congress amended the bill replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans" to celebrate all veterans rather than just the ones who died in World War I. We continue to celebrate the day as Veterans Day, still recognizing the original tie with November 11. That means Veterans Day is on the same day every year -- November 11 -- regardless of which day of the week it falls.

Are you looking for PLTW resources for your virtual students?
Although virtual students do not experience hands-on activities like students learning face-to-face, PLTW created distance-learning resources to better support teachers with curricular enhancements embedded in the existing instructional method. PLTW Community is designed to provide discussions for all PLTW courses. It is a space where all PLTW teachers can share their ideas and ask questions with teachers from all over the country. Just sign in to the PLTW site https://my.pltw.org/login and begin interacting with other teachers around the nation!
CTE Continues to Expand PLTW Programs
We are continuing to expand PLTW Programs at the high school level. We are very excited about implementing Cybersecurity to the Computer Science Program at Immokalee High School. This course introduces the tools and concepts of cybersecurity and encourages students to create solutions that allow people to share computing resources while protecting individual privacy.
The addition of Biomedical Science courses to our Health Science Academies at Barron Collier High School and Immokalee High School are creating much enthusiasm among students. Human Body Systems allows students to build organs and tissues on a skeletal Maniken®; and Medical Interventions explores how to detect and fight infections; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail.
Entrepreneurship
We are excited to announce that Uncharted Learning has available distance learning material that focuses on every unit of the curriculum. The common cartridge has been integrated in CANVAS and is available for use. The cartridge includes student-centered instructions and other activities that can be adapted to engage students from a distance. Additionally, a ThINC Tank INC platform for teachers, students and alums was created. This format will allow all members of the Uncharted Learning community, as well as leading entrepreneurship industry experts across the globe, to participate in a virtual webinar series designed to foster real time engagement and cross-school collaboration throughout the school year. If you want to participate in this exciting new opportunity, please visit the following link: https://www.unchartedlearning.org/uncharted-learning-student-entrepreneurship
Work-Based Learning
Work-based Learning helps to provide students with real world work experiences that bridge the gap between what is learned in the classroom and what happens in the workplace, all while helping them develop employability skills. This is something that CCPS works towards providing all students, especially in high school. Due to these unprecedented times, CCPS is unable to host any visitors or volunteers on any of our school campuses; however, it is still up to us to engage, educate, and provide these work-force readiness experiences to students.
Arthrex, a longtime partner of CCPS and highly sought-after company, annually hosts CCPS students at their facility to offer work-site tours. To continue to provide work-based learning to our students, they developed an innovative and informative video that displays career opportunities and pathways available to students. Discover what goes on at Arthrex and how companies in Collier County are helping to make our students College, Career and Life Ready!
