Evergreen's Mustang Messenger

December 1, 2020

Hello From Mr. Danford

Greetings and Happy Holidays, Evergreen Families!

After a nice Thanksgiving vacation, I hope you are feeling rested and rejuvenated. I hope, too, the time with family was well spent. It was somewhat challenging to stay safe and away from larger gatherings, but I'm glad to be doing my part. I'm sure you can say the same.

During our few days off, I took time to appreciate the good during these crazy, COIVD times. I have lots to be thankful for, especially as a building principal.

I am thankful for the many Evergreen kiddos receiving their learning in the face-to-face environment, while our remote Mustangs, I know, are receiving the best from their teachers as well.

And then our staff. I am fortunate to work every day with such an amazing group of caring adults—custodial, office staff, paraeducators, and teachers. Bus drivers, too. A few of our drivers are spending time at school in supporting roles, which is pretty fun and much appreciated.

I value Mrs. Montecucco and Ms. Tina as well. Our assistant principal and social worker take care of kids in so many quiet, amazing ways each and every day. True examples of kindness, caring, and commitment.

And thank you all for getting your kiddos up in the morning and to school on time (here at school or in front of a Zoom call), for getting that homework done, for attending to that nightly reading… and for just being involved.

Happy Holidays!

Cold Weather is Upon Us

Colder weather is here!

Be sure to send your child to school with appropriate clothing for the weather conditions, including a warm coat, boots, hat, and gloves.

Unless temperatures fall below that 15-degree mark, we will be outside to begin the day. We may have a modified recess schedules when temps are just too chilly, however.

Morning lineup will be inside when temperatures fall below 25 degrees. Please remember, outside lineup begins at 9:00 AM. Children who do not eat breakfast should not arrive before 9:00. We do not want students standing in the cold any longer than necessary. In addition, we do not have supervision outside for our students until 9:00.

If you need assistance providing cold-weather clothing items for your child(ren), do not hesitate to call the office at 465-6400 and ask to speak to our social worker, Ms. Tina. She can direct you to available resources.

New Quarantine Guidelines

Please read the updated quarantine protocols recently shared with us from Spokane Regional Health:

Quarantine of adjacent students in classrooms will occur only with classrooms in which students do not wear masks or facial coverings or where the positive student was not wearing a mask.

Quarantine of classrooms will occur if two or more cases are infectious in the classroom during two consecutive calendar weeks regardless of link or exposure source of those cases.

These updated protocols are encouraging and will reduce numbers of students out of the building.

6-feet Distance

To be completely transparent, we are working diligently to maintain all that it takes to remain safe and COVID-free. We wear face coverings, wash hands regularly, and maintain 6-feet social distance.

When traveling the halls, while in the gym or in the lunch line, and while in classrooms, we work to remain six feet from our neighbors.

But the truth is, there are times that kids are within those boundaries. Sometimes you might find Kindergarteners or 2nd graders closer. But know, that your Evergreen staff is extremely cautious and working hard to remind our students to keep that distance, but in dealing with littles as young as 5-years-old, we cannot practically keep at that appropriate and recommend distance ALL of the time. Although, staff is trying hard daily.

Mock Remote Day

Face-to-face teachers at Evergreen will hold a mock remote day on December 8 to allow for our students (and teachers) to better understand how they might navigate all that it means to learn remotely...on the off chance we have to temporarily hold classes virtually.

Students will access SeeSaw (K-2) and Google Classroom (3-5) so as to know what is expected in each remote scenario. We have no plans to move to a remote scenario, but we do wish to be prepare in case.

Penguin Patch Holiday Shop Is On!

Last year the Evergreen PTO brought our students the Penguin Patch Holiday Shop, and this year we are pleased to share this fun event again. Since we have different learning options, we have different shopping options as well. For our virtual students, we have the online Penguin Patch option available from Nov. 30-Dec. 4. Our face-to-face students will be able to shop at school Dec. 14-18. There are dozens of gift options starting from $0.50-$12.00, with items for grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, siblings and friends.

For the Virtual Store, please visit PenguinPatch.com/Shop and type in Evergreen Elementary or put in our school code: 20190657. If you don't want to pay for shipping directly to your house, there is an option for your students' purchases to be shipped to the school at no additional cost. Our kids have missed so much this year, and we are thrilled that this is not an event that will be added to that list of misses. If you have a virtual student that wants to shop in person, let us know and we will make that happen.

PTO Board Positions Are Still Open

PTO has met twice this year—in September and in October. Join us every 3rd Wednesday of the month via Zoom at 6:30.

Join via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84109588475

Our new treasurer was voted in recently, but two positions remain open: VP of Community and Volunteers and our Secretary position. Please consider becoming involved in PTO, and possibly entertain a Board position.

We Do Not Celebrate Birthdays With Food

Birthdays for kids are special. These milestones mean a lot to our students and their families.

Although we love to celebrate birthdays at Evergreen, we do not celebrate birthdays with food as our Mead Board of Directors have written. Board policy states…

The Mead School District is committed to providing school environments that promote and protect children's health and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity.

Once monthly a teacher may celebrate birthdays or holidays with food, but typically, we’ll celebrate in other ways, keeping the health of our kids in mind. See your teacher for ideas.

Parents' Right to Know

Teacher and Paraprofessional Qualifications

Districts and schools must inform the parents of Title I, Part A (Evergreen is an all-Title building) students that they may request, and the district and schools will provide, certain information on the professional qualifications of the students’ classroom teachers and paraprofessionals providing services to their child.

Should you desire such information, do not hesitate to contact Mr. Danford, building principal, or Ms. Boldrick, Title I teacher.

Evergreen's Contact Information

Stay in touch. There are lots of ways to do that. Connect directly with your classroom teacher as well.
