Bethany Hamilton

On October 31, 2003 Bethany Hamilton went out to surf and suddenly she was armless"I was lying on my board parallel to the waves. One of my arms was lying inside the water, and the other arm was just holding the board. Then the shark just came up and attacked me, and it kind of pulled me back and forth. It was only, like, 2 or 3 seconds, so it was really short. All of a sudden Bethany goes, 'I got attacked by a shark!'" says Bethany's fellow surfer, Holt, "and she wasn't panicking or anything, so I almost thought she was kidding. So she was paddling in toward me. I was probably 20-feet away. And then I saw a bunch of blood in the water." After a few days Bethany was out of the hospital and it was up to her to decide what she was going to do with her life. Either she could just live her life normally and find a new hobby or continue surfing with an arm. And thankfully Bethany chose the second option. After receiving tons of fan mail stating that she was there hero. Bethany used that as a solution to her life dilemmas and was inspired to overlook the difficulties in her life. Bethany pulled out the surfboard and started to surf again. Now twelve years later Bethany is still a surfer champion (even without an arm) who continues to inspire people everyday with her bravery and perseverance.

Steps to Achievng Greatness

Step 1: Create a Goal

-Decide what you want to achieve and concentrate only on that goal.

Step 2: Identify The Problem

-Recognize the problem and figure out a way to work around and/or solve the problem. It will make achieving the goal a lot easier if you eliminate the problem.

Step 3: Use Positive action and thinking

-Achieving greatness would be impossible if you weren't positive and optimistic. Start by telling yourself everyday that you can achieve anything you put your mind to, and not only having positive thoughts but to also have positive actions to go with it. Meaning if you are doing something difficult find ways to make it easier. Becoming a writer? Take a journalism class to learn or thing or two. It wont be easy but it will be worth it.

Step 4: Never give up

-Tenacity and perseverance are the signs of greatness. Without you wouldn't be where you are.If you dont struggle it isn't hard enough. Just remember remarkable people like Jesse Owens could have given up when they encountered harsh racism, but giving up wouldn't have given Owens 4 gold medals and the chance to break a variety of records
