GRIT Superstars!

Today was the first ever GRIT Luncheon. Teachers selected one student who displayed the most GRIT - Gratitude, Responsibility, Integrity, and Tenacity - all quarter. These students and their parents were invited to eat lunch with the teachers and be honored with a special certificate. Thank you, PTSA, for all your hard work in organizing and sponsoring this awesome event!

Learning Outside of the Classroom

Environmental Science took their annual trip to Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) this week. Students and chaperones left early Monday morning on the two-hour journey across 26 miles to Toyon Bay. The days were filled with hands-on labs, outdoor games, and shared meal experiences. Skilled instructors taught students about algae, plankton, sharks, fish, invertebrates, and more. Students even had the opportunity to taste algae and plankton! Many students also enjoyed dissecting a squid.

The highlight of the trip for many was the time in the water. Students and chaperones snorkeled a total of three times, with one of the snorkeling outings being a night snorkel. They all took out underwater flashlights and explored the nocturnal sea life. At one point, everyone turned out all their lights and they experienced bio-luminescent plankton that lit up the water. It was quite amazing! Thank you to Mr. Joyce, Miss Mazzera, Mr. Priebe and Mrs. Glembocki for chaperoning and a special thank you to Mrs. Zellmer for chaperoning and planning the whole trip!

TUPE Photo Contest

As part of Dwyer's TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) program, we invite all students to participate in this photo contest. The California Tobacco Control Program’s (CTCP) invites you to enter the annual Tobacco’s Toxic Impact in My Community Photo Contest. The purpose of the contest is to raise awareness about the impact that tobacco use and vaping has on California communities. The contest will highlight images submitted by Californians that “tell the story” about the negative impact that tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, have on youth and local communities.. The contest runs from February 25- March 22, 2019 and there are prizes to be awarded. See here for the 2019 Photo Contest Rules and Requirements.
