Topic 7: Understanding Subtraction
Meaning of Subtraction
Throughout Topic 7, students represent subtraction using their fingers, objects, drawings, and verbal explanations. As understanding develops, students learn how to complete sentences and write equations to model subtraction situations. Students understand subtraction as "take apart" (sometimes referred to as "separate") and "take from" (or "take away").Fluently Subtract Within 5
Students begin to develop fluency with subtraction within 5 by finding patterns in subtraction facts. Seeing the part-whole relationship and finding patterns, such as if zero is subtracted from a number, the difference is that number, will help students to subtract fluently. Seeing subtraction facts for a number organized in a list helps students notice other patterns, such as the difference decreases when the number being subtracted increases.
Common Subtraction Situations
Students focus on two different types of problems in this topic: "take from: and "take apart." Students represent the problems in different ways including with objects, drawings, and equations. They see how each object, picture, or part of an equation represents a quantity in the word problem.

Topic 8: Understanding Place Value
Numbers to 99
34 is 3 tens and 4 ones.
34 is 2 tens and 14 ones
Topic 9-Compare Two-Digit Numbers
Students identify number patterns. They use tools such as place value blocks and the hundred chart, to help name numbers that are 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, and 10 less.
2nd Grade Math
Topic 9: Numbers to 1,000 - Extending Place Value Understandings
Concrete and pictorial models of place-value blocks are used to reinforce that our number system is based on groups of 10. Students learn that when they get 10 of one place value, they move to the next value: 10 ones make a ten, 10 tens make a hundred, and 10 hundreds make a thousand. Place-value models and place-value charts help students learn to write 3 digit numbers.
Understanding the Value of Each Digit
Patterns and Comparing
Students learn to compare 3-digit number using place value. They start with the greatest place value and work towards the least place value. Then they write comparisons using the symbols >, <, and =.
