William Lloyd Garrison
William Lloyd garrison was an abolitionist who wrote a newspaper called The Liberator. He used the newspaper to tell people that slavery was wrong and should be abolished. He was often harassed because of his work.
Sojorner Truth
Sojourner Truth was an African American woman who gained recognition as an anti-slavery speaker.She was born a slave but was freed through the emancipation of slaves.
Fredric Douglas
Fredric Douglas was a slave who taught himself to read and write.He escaped slavery and became a spokesman for the abolitionist movement. He also published The North Star, an newspaper telling about the conditions of slavery.
Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave who became a conductor on the Underground Railroad and helped over 300 slaves escape to freedom. She is known as the Mosses of her people.
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin. Her book was a best seller.It showed how cruel slavery was.She did not like that Abraham Lincoln was postponing freeing the slaves.
John Brown
John brown was an abolitionist who moved to Kansas after the Kansas-Nebraska act was passed.He and his sons participated in the violence that gave Kansas the name
"Bleeding Kansas".Brown was hung because he led a raid on the United States arsenal at Harper's Ferry and it failed.
