Roadrunner Report

The rundown on Ridgewood Elementary School-June 8, 2020

Principal Perspective - Reflecting

As we end the year, we reflect on what we have accomplished and how we can do better in the future. This week, I have been reflecting a lot on how we can support our Black/African American students and eliminate racism, as the death of George Floyd reminds us that racism continues in our country and we must do more to fight it.

We have also begun reflecting on our experience these last three months of distance learning. We will continue to prepare for what a return to school will look like in the fall, and how we can reconnect our students with school, knowing that the transition back to our building will take planning and time.

I invite you to join me in reflecting, brainstorming and idea sharing on both of these topics during Coffee with the Principal this Wednesday from 9:00-10:00a.m. I am eager for parent feedback on both how we can eliminate racism, and how we can support learning for all in the fall.

Fifth Grade Clap Out

Normally at the end of the last day of school each year, we line the halls of Ridgewood to cheer and clap for our fifth graders as they leave our building for the last time. This year we are inviting them to drive through our parking lot on Thursday, June 11that 2:00, and then drive a short loop back to the school and through the parking lot a second time.

Families with students grade K-4 can participate by cheering ("Fifth grade power, shout it louder") and clapping for our fifth graders along the route mapped below. Fifth graders will be seated in the passenger seat, so please line the right side of each road, and remember to stay safe and socially distant.

We will also be sharing a live zoom of fifth graders when they drive through at 2:00. This can be accessed here:

Here are the details for our Fifth Grade Families:

  • Fifth grade families will drive through a loop, passing our school twice.

    • Since it can be difficult to see in a car, please have a sign with your child’s name visible for us.

    • Please have your fifth grader ride in passenger side of the vehicle, as we will have staff staged on the passenger side so we can cheer and clap for them.

    • Feel free to decorate your car, as this is a celebration!

  • Please arrive between 1:45-2:00 and line up to the west the Melnore Street entrance to the school. The line will go from the school entrance west to 106th.

  • At 2:00 we will begin sending cars through from south to north. You will see photo signs in the grass, and staff will be on the flagpole side to cheer and clap.

    • We will have a zoom/video station set up under the flagpole. You can stop here and wave.

  • You will then drive a short loop (see map), where other Ridgewood families will be invited to cheer and clap for you, ending at the south entrance to our school.

  • Once again, drive north through the parking lot. This time the driver will receive the child’s sign and goodie bag, and students will get a special treat on the passenger side.

  • That’s it! Congratulations and good luck in middle school! We hope to stay connected with you, and look forward to the amazing places you will go!

**Please note, we are re-evaluating our Supply Lists to move away from community supplies and provide for possible home learning in the fall. Updated lists will be posted by June 15.***

If you click on the link above you can purchase all your school supplies for the fall for your child going into K through 5th grade next year, and support a small business at the same time! We changed companies from previous years and this company only serves about 6,000 schools nationwide. And you never have to enter a store! This will only be available until the 3rd week of June, so please order your supply kits now and pass this on to anyone else who has a Ridgewood student next year (including incoming K students). Oh, and this is NOT a fundraiser, simply a way for Ridgewood parents to get their school supply shopping done in 5 minutes or less :) Your supplies will be in your child's classroom in the fall when they arrive.

  • We are using 1st Day School Supplies for our school supply orders for the upcoming year. Below is a link to the store for you to purchase your supply kit. All kits will be delivered directly to the school before the start of school in the fall.
  • Supply kits must be ordered by JUNE 12th, 2020 to be included in the order.
  • The teachers have put in specific requests for items they want in the supply kits. We have addressed issues with the quality of the supplies as well.

For those who want to purchase supplies on their own, lists will be coming out. We will let you know when they are out.
In addition to resources provided to all BSD families, our Ridgewood Community has set up resources for our families, specifically our Little Free Library and new Little Free Pantry. Both are located at the front entry of our building, and have food, hygiene items, school supplies and books available for families. If you are able to contribute items to either pantry, please do so. You are welcome to take without giving and give without taking. If your family has a specific need to be met, please reach out to our staff as well, and we will help as we are able.

If at any time you are in need of emergency food, please call us at Ridgewood and leave a message. Messages will be checked daily. We will do our best to assist you.

Anyone can call 211 for assistance with housing, childcare, utility bills, or if you have health and safety questions or need any other resources. Help is available in several languages. You can also get help online at

The Oregon Food Bank is open. Check here for more information:

All families can set up free internet access for 2 months through Comcast. Go here for details: or call 1-855-846-8376.

Meals for Students

With no meals being available on Fridays, students will receive two meals on Thursdays.

The paper box top collection program has been discontinued by General Mill, so we are no longer collecting box tops at school. However, you can still earn money for Ridgewood; if you see the label below, simply use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. Box Tops are still worth the same amount and what’s great is the app will instantly add cash to the school’s earnings online. Find more info here.
