# Interesting Integers

## What is an Integer?

Integer- A whole number or it's opposite ex. -9=9

Same signs- Add the absolute values and use the common sign. ex. 3+5=8 -3+(-)5=-8

Different signs- Subtract the lesser absolute value from the greater absolute value. Then use the sign of the number with the greater absolute value. ex. -7+10=3 7+(-10)= -3

## How to Subtract Integers

To subtract an integer add its opposite. ex. 7-(-)5= 12

## Vocabulary

Negative Integers- integers that are less than zero

Positive Integers- integers that are greater than zero

Opposites- numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line, but are on opposite sides of zero

Absolute Value- the absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on a number line, the absolute value of a is written |a|

## How to Multiply Integers

The product of two positive integers is positive ex. 3(5)=15

The product of two negative integers is positive ex. -4(-6)=24

The product of a positive integer and a negative integer is negative ex. 2(-8)=-16

## How to Divide Integers

Same Sign- the quotient of two integers with the same sign is positive Ex. 15÷3=5

Different Signs- the quotient of two integers with different signs is negative ex. 12÷ (-4)=-3

Zero- the quotient of zero and any nonzero integer is 0 ex. 0÷13=0
