Cedar Grove Friday Flash
October 13, 2023
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
The Smith Center is celebrating its 60th Anniversary of the MCPS Outdoor Environmental Education Programs on Saturday, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, come rain or shine! And it's free! The Smith Center is at 5110 Meadowside Lane, Derwood, MD. Parking will be extremely limited on-site. Attendees are strongly encouraged to take the shuttle from Magruder High School, 5939 Muncaster Mill Rd, Derwood, MD. Mrs. Hirschhorn and Ms. Troup will be at a station, helping students decorate pumpkins with paint and thumbprints! You might even spot Mr. Derby!
National School Bus Safety Week occurs October 16-20. Please review the important information and tips linked below to help keep our children safe. In addition, the Maryland State Police and the Maryland Center for School Safety is reminding motorists of the following message: Stop for school buses and pay attention when driving, especially in school zones during times of day when school buses are typically on routes. Stop when a bus stops for a routine stop. It is illegal to pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing. Prepare to stop when the school bus is flashing its yellow lights and be cautious of students moving towards buses during these times. Students of all ages are unpredictable. Therefore, prepare for the unexpected and maintain a safe distance from school buses at all times.
MCPS Rules & Safety About Riding the School Bus
Our annual Fall Food Drive is back as we continue our tradition of collecting foods for DAMASCUS HELP! Please consider donating food and baby items the week of October 23-27. This can be a great family activity to teach about kindness in our community and doing our best to help those in need. Please click on this link to see suggestions of items for donation. Items may be dropped off and placed in boxes in the main entrance hallway. Thank you for your consideration in participating in our food drive.

From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Media Specialist
The October media monthly reflects the latest information about all the wonderful things that are happening in the media center. We had our second Pink Out Wednesday, and I thank you for your beautiful pictures. Keep them coming. I am also looking forward to your students' book character pumpkins! Finally, I've put up a new interactive bulletin board, asking students to respond to the questions “how can YOU show care for this special place” and “how can WE show care for this special place.” Of course, the special place is Cedar Grove. I am excited about their responses. Have a great weekend!
