The battle of antietam was fought on september 17, 1862 between the union and confederacy. It took place near Sharpburg, Maryland. All battle had been fought on southern soil. The union won in the Battle of antietam.

The union had 87,000 soldiers and the confederacy had 37,000. 1,300 people died during the war but mostly from the confederacy's side.

This battle happened in Maryland near Atietam Creek and a town called Sharpsburg. Sometimes the battles were called different names because the Union named their battles after the nearest body of water and the Confederate named the battles after the nearest town.
