Seniors
Many of you are receiving admissions decisions from colleges. It's an exciting (and possibly disappointing) time for you. Just remember that there is a college for you that is your Best Fit. Also, please login to Naviance and put in the admission decisions as you hear back from each college. This is how we gather data that is used in the Scatter grams so please do your part. See directions for updating college results in Naviance if you don't know how to do this.
Hopefully all of you have completed your FAFSA or CA Dream Act application. It is a California State law (AB 132) that all seniors must either complete the application or an opt-out form for financial aid.
Once again, if you are planning on Community College, don't forget to attend our Application and Orientation workshops this month and next.
2/28 @ 2:45 pm - West Valley College Pre-Orientation
3/1 @ 2:45 pm - SJCC Orientation
3/13 @ 2:45 pm - Foothill College
3/16 @ 1:45 pm - De Anza College
Not interested in college at this time? Well that is okay too. Check out this NPR article: "High-paying jobs that don't need a college degree? Thousands of them sit empty" It talks about jobs in the trades that are sitting empty because there are no workers to fill them. You can get trained and paid at the same time so you won't be incurring debt that you might if you were to go to college and not have a plan. Perhaps just consider that going to college right after high school isn't the best fit for everyone.
Juniors
As Juniors, you're probably feeling some pressure to do well academically, but also to starting planning what you are going to do next year. Are you going to apply to 4 year colleges in the fall? If so, this coming break would be a good time to start thinking about what is important to you. This can help you when the time comes to write essays for college applications or for scholarships. The College Essay Guy has a great 5 minute activity you can use to Brainstorm ideas. It's the "Values Exercise". If you have 5-10 minutes to spare, check it out and start thinking about what is really important to you.

The Incredible Career of an Economist by Maddon Hoh-Choi
“The first lesson of economics is scarcity: there is never enough of anything to fully satisfy all those who want it. The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics.” - Thomas Sowell
Economists are professionals who study how societies allocate resources to satisfy human wants and needs. Their work involves analyzing data, creating models, and making recommendations to businesses, governments, and other organizations.
Economists play a crucial role in solving economic crisis by developing policy solutions. During times of economic instability, economists use their expertise in macroeconomics, finance, and policy analysis to help stabilize financial markets, reduce unemployment, and stimulate economic growth. They may propose solutions such as stimulus packages, tax incentives, and regulatory changes to address the challenges facing the economy.
They also provide advice to the government, businesses and other organizations. Without the guidance of economists, it would be challenging for governments and businesses to make informed decisions during economic crises, making the role of economists vital to the global economy.
There have been many influential economists throughout history, including Adam Smith, John Maynard Keynes, Milton Friedman, Paul Krugman, and Amartya Sen. These economists made significant contributions to the field, such as developing new economic theories, advocating for policy changes, and winning Nobel Prizes in economics.
To become an economist, a minimum of a bachelor's degree in economics is required, although some positions may require a master's or Ph.D. degree. Typical entry-level education for economists is a master's degree. A few positions may only require a bachelor's degree. Additionally, work experience in a related occupation is often necessary. On-the-job training is also essential, as economists must learn to work with data and research tools.
Median Pay: $108,350 per year
Typical Entry-level Education: Bachelor's Degree but some position require Masters or PhD.
Work Experience in Related Occupation: None
On the Job Training: None
Job outlook, 2019-2029: %14 (faster than average)
