A Message of Hope from Your Treasure Hunters
Hope Focus: Aces of Success
“All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are? Those who have cared about you and wanted what was best for you in life.”
When I heard this, I thought of four people in my life: my mom, my uncle, my 3rd/6th grade teacher, and my soccer coach. Each of them made a profound impact on me during my childhood that is evident in the person I am today. From my mom I learned that no struggle can keep you from what you want and things that happen to you don't define who you are. My uncle showed me that I mattered by cheering for me at my soccer games, supporting school events, and spending fun, quality time with me. Both my teacher and soccer coach saw my potential and pushed me beyond my comfort zone because they knew I was capable, even when I didn't. While each relationship was different, all of them had the same things in common: unconditional love and support, a belief in who I was and could be, and never ending encouragement. I carry all four of these people in my heart every day.
For Kids at Hope, these special people in our lives are called "aces." There are four kinds of aces, each one represented by an ace in a deck of cards:
- Ace of Hearts: Anchor Parent
The one who loves you unconditionally and cares for you 24/7/365. - Ace of Spades: High Expectations
The one who sees your potential and pushes you beyond what you think you're capable of because they believe in you that much. - Ace of Diamonds: Opportunities to Succeed
The one who appreciates your talents, skills, and intelligence, and gives you opportunities to use them and be successful. - Ace of Clubs: Other Caring Adult
The one who sees the good things in you and that you know you can count on for any help.
Some of us have one of every ace, some have multiples of one kind of ace, some of us have all four aces rolled into one person. There is no magic number of aces that we need, as long as we have at least one person that genuinely cares, believes in who we are and who we can be, and wants the best for us. One can make a world of difference. One can give us the hope we need to push through challenges and thrive.
This month, I encourage you to try Mr. Rogers' request. Take a quiet moment, as little as ten seconds, to think of those aces in your life, those special ones who loved you into being and helped you become who you are. You can even take it a step further and thank them. Write a letter, make a phone call, or have a private conversation in your heart. Let them know the hope and joy they gave you, and that you wouldn't be who you are without their influence.
