Where is it
Pamlico Sound is the lagoon between the mainland of North Carolina and the Outer Banks. It stretches from Dare County to Portsmouth Island.
Why are estuaries important?
Estuaries are important because they provide a protected environment where food is abundant. They provide a big diversity in marine life.
Animals found here
Here, there are dolphins, sea turtles, seals, flounder, shellfish, and more.
Rivers that feed into here
Some rivers that feed into here are the Neuse and Pamlico rivers. It is also fed by the Oregon Inlet.
Threats to Pamlico Sound
Some threats to this estuary are toxic materials being dumped into it, erosion, and habitat loss due to population increase.
