Engaging in Epic Education...
--Ms. Schwarze, High School English Teacher
Poem 1
In the spring of 2017 I worked
As a roofer, getting paid 16 bucks an hour.
Traveling from place to place,
Moving from one house to another.
replacing or repairing flat roofs and steep roofs,
Hammering out metal or hammering in a nail.
Sipping on water or some coke,
Not stopping till the job was done.
glove after glove replacing old
plywood with new wood
Removing unneeded nails
replacing them with new ones
Driving and swerving in traffic trying
to get somewhere to have some food
Before I have to return to the routine
Working in the blazing sun day after day
wishing some days, I didn't have this job
Cause it became hard to work such
a hard job and in the hot weather
But always was happy with my job
could say I was blessed
To have this job without it life would've been harder
It put money in my wallet food in my mouth
And gas in my car clothes on my back
Shoes on my feet and
many and many gifts for my girl
I felt like I was doing something good
Good for me good for the customer
I made a living while I helped others
To maintain their roof intact
Playing music on my phone
While it played on my speaker
Listening to my music to keep me entertained
Watching the time go [by] while the cars went by
I was feeling the pain in my back
But not giving up
because I wanted to make bank
many days I didn't want to work
but I had to work to keep my bills [paid] off
There wasn't telling how the day was gone
Cause anything could happen
it could rain or it could storm up a wind
and ruin our plans for the day
Poem 2 "Lost Boy"
So I've always been that type of teen.
Crazy and reckless been a fun adventure.
Made many mistakes in the times that I struggled.
Through the ups and downs she was still there.
She has helped me through the stressful times.
She is always passing time.
Time flies so do I?
I elevate my brain.
But these games are confusing.
At times I be losing.
In reality I'm just improving.
Focus on the rough times.
So I know what to do.
Confused and lost that's how it be.
Got in trouble with the law.
Now I'm going to fix it.
On and on are thoughts.
Should I leave and better myself.
Or stay the same and end myself.
Roaming around the streets.
Lost kid trapped hoping to better himself.
Can he and will he?
As he still on his decisions.
Confused on who and who is real.
Many saying they are but who knows.
As I signed my name on the bottom of the application.
Signing myself off for 6 months.
Can I be the one who I want to be?
Sent off to Pierce, Idaho.
Never ever been gone that long.
Stressing all the time not having her around.
You may wonder who she is.
Her name is Marijuana.
She's been around yes I know.
People say she a gateway drug.
in reality she helping out.
Know that you know she's the pass.
Zig zags is not the way to go.
Now that I'm at the academy.
Reality starting to kick in.
losing friends might be a win.
Poem 3
Getting in shape for the hardest football season ever
Really super hyped and really super hot
Practice has been in high 90s since we started
Sweat dripping down my face and body
Muscles and legs are sore as they can be
Always tired never enough sleep
Fighting hard to win
Playing hard every snap of the ball
Running till I puke and there is no more sweat in my body
First week of practice is always the worst
Their Quarter-back and running-back expected to be the fastest
Line-man expected to be the strongest
First game was 90 degree weather
Next game is in 100 degree weather
It's getting worse before it gets better
Fighting for a starting position
Showing no pain and giving the coach all you got
Running fast and always fired up
Ready to beat any of our fiends
Every play gets more perfect
Every practice proceeds as our flock of football players get better and better
Every pass has to be on a dime
No room for [stupid] mistakes
Champions are built not born
Pushing myself till there's nothing left
Defensive-line pressuring me to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible
Fighting beside my teammates trying to win Friday night
Every touchdown is team-made, not individual
Football is a way of life and to succeed you have to show how bad you want it
Football can make or break you
Putting all your faith into your coach
He won't just get you prepared but also makes you have discipline
Secretly getting you prepared for the real world
Taking high school boys and turning them into men
Showing you what integrity is and how bad you need it
Making you work for what you want so badly, which is to win
Making a perfect effort and giving yourself and the team all you got
Working harder than you've ever worked
The coach expects the best from you
In return he'll give you the best from him
Put your trust in the team and the coach and you'll get trust back
Know the position and know your plays
Driving yourself to the in-zone
It's game day and you're nervous
Butterflies in your stomach
Get onto the field and you hear the timer go off
Time to start the game
Staring into the eyes of your opponent
Knowing now nothing matters except the win
Sweat dripping off your gear
Snap of the ball, now the game has begun
All you hear is pads hitting
Following the blocks your teammates make for you
Breaking a few tackles and driving your feet
You see the end zone and that's all you're focused on
You see a wide open space in the field
3 other defensive guys chasing after you
Running as hard as you can to not let them catch you
You're one yard away and feel that hand on your back
Getting pulled down but so close
Diving to get across that line
Referees' hands go up
You made it, you got that touch-down
Rest of the game you fight and keep fighting
At the end you look at the scoreboard and see the score
Smiling because you won
Poem 4 "Cowboy's Life"
I spend my summer in the mountains
But it's not for fun
I work my tail off all day
They are quite a pain
Gotta check the water tanks
Make sure the barbed-wire fences are good
Talk to the ranchers near you
So you know they ain't got any of your cattle
Ranching is not an easy job
Some years you make bank
But some other years
You might go bankrupt badly
If you go bankrupt
You lose everything you have
So to avoid malignant bankruptcy
You gotta take care of your cows
Because your cows pay the bills
So it's your responsibility to be the caretaker
The caretaker I am
I stay in a little cabin
Running water but no power
I wake up
Then I get to work
I am the only person up there usually
So there is nothing to do but work
That is what I get paid to do anyways
But it is not about the big bucks
I love bein' a cowboy
I got raised for it
It is in my blood
I wake up and want to work like it is my craving
It's the breath I breathe
And I take large breaths
But there's a fiend in cowboy life
Cows come first
Lots of late nights
Your marriage might not work
But all women flock to you at the start
But when they stay
They start to see the truth
The women don't come first
The ranch and the cows do
The cowboy's life is the ranch
He will sacrifice anything to keep it alive
Including letting his gal leave
Not even hesitating to make a decision
So ranching can be fun and all
But it can also harrow
You gotta do what you gotta do
Cuz the ranch dispenses cows for people to eat
But a Lanny big cowboy
Loves his job very much so
So you just gotta put your head down and work
You will do well in the life of the cowboy
But bein' a cowboy means doin' a lil' farmin'
In the winter the snow covers up the good feed
Leavin' your cows to starve'So if you farm in the summer a 'lil
Make quite a few hay bales to feed
You can make it through the winter pretty easy
This helps the cows keep their calves warm
If your calves get cold that is very bad
Calves will die in the cold
If all your calves die
You won't have vales to sell
Then you will go broke
So be a good cowboy and take care of your cows
Meet a few of our new staff...
Ms. Lindsey McKinney
By: Yesy Juarez
Among our new Rimrock staff this year is Lindsey McKinney. She was born in Marion, Ohio and she likes to read, travel, and go swimming. Before coming to Rimrock, she taught in Dietrich, Idaho for two years. Watching her mom teach, working during the summer with students and Upward Bound are a few things that inspired her to become a teacher. Her favorite part about being a teacher is helping students work toward their goals after high school. Her favorite part about working in Rimrock is the sense of community in the building. Some of Ms. McKinney’s students say she is a very calm, helpful, and relaxed teacher.
Mrs. Kara Contreras
By: Jorge Alcantar
Kara Contreras was born in Sacramento, California and is now teaching at Rimrock Jr./Sr. High School. She is a math teacher for grades 9th - 12th. During her childhood Kara thought she was going to be a doctor or a engineer. Mrs.Contreras found out she wanted to be a math teacher when she attended the University of Montana. She worked as a math tutor for the math department, and as months passed, she realized she loved and enjoyed teaching math. She went on to earn her certification in Math and in Science.
On her birthday, Mrs. Contreras enjoys a Mexican dinner, and dish with mole is her favorite. Her birthday falls on Cinco de Mayo (May 5), which is an important day for Mexico. What Mrs. Contreras likes doing as a hobby is riding horses and her Appaloosa named Vera. Vera is unfortunately is losing her eyesight because of her age, but Mrs. Contreras talks to her so that Vera can use her senses to find her.
Mrs. Contreras would like to one day visit Venice, Italy and ride on those “Long super skinny funky looking boats” (Gondola), while eating an authentic Italian pizza.
In her spare time, Mrs. Contreras enjoys being outdoors, walking her dogs and baking (even though at the end she ends up eating a lot of cookie dough).
Mrs. Contreras's dream place would be the North Pole. She thinks it would be a fun thing to say when they asked about places she's been. Although she would only want to be there for four to five seconds because of the negative digits and the freezing cold. Just enough for a selfie!
Her favorite place she has been was with her husband for their honeymoon. They visited a Long Narrow island called Isla Holbox, north of Cancun. It is covered in dirt roads, but their aren't any cars.
When asked what she likes about Rimrock, Mrs. Contreras responded, "I like that it's a small school and I get to know everyone in the school very well." She also likes the nice staff working here. She also likes the fact that she gets to know her students beyond their grade and name.
Some of her students said this about her: “She is helpful, very organized and gives us enough time in math," -Yesy Juarez “Mrs. Contreras is a really good math teacher and explains things very well," - Jasmine Araujo. Mrs. Contreras, you are a very helpful teacher and we hope to have you here for a long time.
Ms. Karen Schwarze
By: Madalynn May
Karen Schwarze is our new High School English teacher. Ms. Schwarze is originally from San Francisco, California. This is her first year teaching full time in a public school though she has had her teaching credential since 2013. Rimrock is very different to her from where she is used to because everyone here knows so much about farming, guns, dirt bikes, etc. She loves getting to know her students and enjoys reading their writing. Rimrock is nice because of its small classes and Ms. Schwarze can work with her students individually during class.
Mrs. Carrie Markham
By: Shelbi Ward
Carrie Markham is a new teacher here at Rimrock Jr./Sr. High School. She has been a teacher for 10 years and she currently teaches the Jr. High students Math and Social Studies. Her favorite part about teaching is the students.
Mrs. Markham loves everything western beginning with her favorite movie “The Cowboys” and her favorite actor, John Wayne. She enjoys reading horse magazines and being outside, doing yard work and riding horses.
Mrs. Markham is not originally from Idaho; she has lived in many different places. She has lived in Arizona, California, Oklahoma, and Oregon. This is because her father was in the Marines for twenty-three years. She lives in Bruneau right now, with her husband and two children.
Mrs. Markham has been in our district before and was a special education teacher, but went to Prairie to teach in a one room school house. She loved the pine trees there and wishes there were more here. We welcome Mrs. Markham back with open arms and hope her time here is very enjoyable.

Cross Country
By: Maria Gomez, Colombian Foreign Exchange Student
A long time could be 8 months, 249 days, and that time could give you experience to be independent in a foreign country; that exactly describes my life in 2017 and all that has befallen to me. ”Always liked...about you...liked” I have said about running. Running is a way to forget everything and just put away my issues for a little while, I can just connect with myself and feel peaceful. When I was in Colombia I used to go for a run every morning after drinking a hot coffee with delicious oatmeal and in the afternoon I used to go to the gym with my dad or my friends. Thus, exercise always has been part of my lifestyle.
If you search up what is Cross Country, you could find that is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open air places over natural terrain and it could sound scary for you because you don't want to fall or have an accident if you run over natural terrains. However, I started to like it and find that running on different terrains rather than just on a machine could make you feel powerful and stronger than you did yesterday. In this month and a half that I have been training for Cross Country, I can say that I love the feeling after practice and even right after I cross the finish line because it gives me happiness and the incredible emotion that is pride in myself and remember each time that I probably said that I will not make it. Thus, life gave me the answer: when you really want something, you have to give your best to achieve it. Therefore, everything that is in your thoughts and your attitude will get you over your issues.

Meet Our Foreign Exchange Students...
Meet Colombian Exchange Student, Maria Gomez
By: Elizabeth Varela
Maria Gomez is an exchange student attending Rimrock Jr./Sr. High School this Fall. She is from Colombia and was born in Bogota. Her full name is Maria Alejandra Gomez Castillo and she has one older brother. She really misses her home, family, friends and her country but she is very grateful to be here. She has two beautiful dogs, one of them is nine years old and the other one is five years old.
Maria came to Grand View to improve her English and to have the experience of living in a different country. She also wants to meet people and learn about another country. She really likes Grand View; it is a really pretty place to her. She says, “The people are friendly and I love my host family.”
She runs Cross Country at Rimrock and she enjoys it because she loves running.
In January, she's going to start her University studies in her home country. She is going to be a nutritionist and she's really looking forward to it.
Meet Thai Exchange Student, King Thaweelarp
By: Cedar Hammock
I had the liberty of talking to King, one of our foreign exchange students from Thailand. I was able to ask her some questions and get to know her better. First off, I want to acknowledge how sweet she is and that she never gives up. I'm so glad she chose to come to Rimrock Jr./Sr. High School! When I asked King why she chose to come to the United States, she responded, “I thought America was was really different and has different things and that's one of the biggest reasons I wanted to come to America. Thailand is such a small country and has way different culture and doesn't have a lot to offer and that's why I really like America.” King explains, “I thought America's food was weird and not spicy like Thailand and the food is always cheesy; it's alright.” What is the weirdest thing about Americans? “The weirdest thing about Americans is they are not polite like people in Thailand,” King expresses. When I asked what she thinks about Rimrock, King answered, "All in all, I really like Rimrock; it has more activities, classes and opportunities than in Thailand.”Fine Arts, School Spirit and Club News...
New Gym Art and School Spirit
By: Sintia Varela
Have you checked out the new paint job in the gym this year? Rimrock added an awesome design during the summer! I asked Mrs. Burk what her first impression of the gym was and she said, “Wow!" The paint job has a big Raider head with a logo that says Rimrock Raiders. “It’s really cool and bright and I really like how we went back to our true colors,” said Senior Elizabeth Varela. Some students and staff really liked that we changed back to our true gold colors in the gym. Although some of the court has a little yellow, the gym looks great.
The gym also may have been the key to boosting our school spirit. Rimrock's school spirit has increased this year and students have a fun time going to school. The Junior High are excited to be Raiders this year. I have also noticed that more and more people come to support our Raiders during their games. School spirit is very important to Rimrock because it shows how much students enjoy school or sports. Come support our Raiders during home games!
DRAMA!
By: Naya Bradshaw
Rimrock Drama Club is almost underway! This year's co-directors, Cathryn Volk, Sariah Pearson, and Kelsi West, are helping students to put on a Fall and Spring production. While the spring play will not be until March, the Fall event is coming up soon in November. Students will put on a variety show presenting a number of independent scenes from different plays. “The first day signups were available, there was a rush after school to sign up. It was really exciting to see!” said co-director, Cathryn Volk. If you want more info contact Cathryn Volk at: cvolk@sd365.us.Rimrock Choir and Band

Rimrock Choir Auditions
By: Cathryn Volk
This fall, three Rimrock choir students are auditioning for the Idaho All State Choir. All State choir is part of a festival that will take place in February at the University of Idaho, and includes a choir, band, orchestra, and jazz ensembles. Students who make it past the audition have the opportunity to rehearse with well known directors for several days and put on a concert for family and friends at the end of it. To audition, the choir students recorded four different segments a cappella, or without accompaniment. They will be competing against singers from all over the state for a spot in this choir.
(Students that auditioned are Holley Bretas, Alto I, Ray Draper, Bass II, and Joshua Smith, Tenor I).
