Iowa Assessment Week April 16 - 20
In addition, I would love to have parents sign up to bring a healthy snack for the class on Tuesday (April 17) and Wednesday (April 18). I will bring a treat for the class on Thursday as a celebration of competing testing week! Please reply all to the email if you'd like to sign up for one of the two days.
News from Ms. Hess
In math, we opened our geometry unit by exploring polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals. We did lots of hands-on sorts that helped us to classify shapes by sides and angles.
In literacy, we asked and answered questions about the acts that led to growing tensions between the colonies and England. We identified cause and effect text structure as we read.
In writing, we are continuing our research projects. We focused on drafting body paragraphs and writing an engaging introduction. We learned that writers use a hook to draw a reader in such as a fact, a quotation, or a question. This week we learned how to embed a quotation from one of our sources into our essay.
In time traveling, I simulated the feelings that colonists had regarding the acts that were put in place leading to growing tensions between the colonies and England. To do this a mock letter arrived addressed to me that informed the class of rights and privileges of 4th and 5th graders at track and field day would be taken away this year. Many students expressed strong emotions about the loss of those privileges, which will continue to be a metaphor in teaching about history! They were all relieved to learn that it was a simulation!
In science, the weather finally cooperated and we were able to track our shadows throughout the day, exploring ideas of rotation and revolution of the Earth and the "movement" of the sun throughout the day.
Amana Day - Wednesday April 25
Dear Parents,
On Wednesday, April 25th fifth grade students will be traveling through Amana to learn about the rich history and culture of the Amana Colonies. We will be leaving the school in the morning to walk to Main Amana to tour the Amana Museum and to learn about how root beer is produced at the Millstream Brewery while enjoying a sack lunch. We will then walk back to Middle Amana via the Lily Pond trail.
Please remember to send your child with a labeled, self-cooled, packed lunch if he/she signed up to bring a lunch. Those who signed up for school lunch will be provided a sack lunch.
We’re so excited to provide our students a chance to learn more about the history of the area.
Please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to a great day!
