The World Without The Lemonade

Michelle Marino

Discrimination has Greatly Shaped and Also Severely Affected America

Job discrimination, denial of voting rights, and segregation all play big parts in American history. Before and a little after the civil war, many american lives were based on slavery. After the Civil war, the Civil Rights act to stop discrimination was passed, but didn't fully go into affect until after Martin Luther Kings Jr. died. Although, Discrimination is still happening in America today. All over the country there are riots, destruction, and random acts of violence because off all the racism. Discrimination isn't only happening to people who are a different race, its happening with peoples religion, sex, national origin and many other factors. America is still being shaped and effected by discrimination and is no where near being finished with it.

There Are Examples of Discrimination All Around the US

About every part of America still have racism and discrimination problems. Today, and astonishing amount of African Americans are still feeling mistreated by the government, police, court, and privet enterprise. Although, it isn't just the African Americans that are being mistreated. For example, if a white person lost their job or got assaulted, everyone takes it for what it is and just believes its an unfortunate event. If a black person gets assaulted or looses their job, many people think it happened to them because they are black, and that there must be some sort of racism behind it. Another example of current racism is songs. Today, more and more songs are being released with words, and saying against white or black people.

Discrimination in the World Today

Discrimination is happening all around the world today, especially in the Middle East. For years, Isis have been violently killing Christians because of their religion. Anywhere in the world, people with odd religions are often left out or mistreated. Women living in the Middle East are also very unsafe, no matter what religion they are. Women there are very often looked down on. Around the world, 28% of women are viewed to men as "property". Along with religion and sex discrimination is still racism. Black people everywhere are still being killed, fired for no reason. and overall mistreated.

Many people in the world Judge or hold prejudice ideas against others they do not know

There are many people all around the world, everyday and every minuet that are being judged or are having prejudice ideas and opinions held against them. The little cases can later end up to be sever cases of this in life. If there is a student walking around in school dressed in dark and dirty looking clothes, others are going to see that student as a bad person and stay away from them. This later leads up to if a person sees someone who looks completely different than them in a grocery store, struggling, there is a big chance that the different person would not get help because they are "weird" and people are afraid of them. Many do not care to look at someones background story, they just assume by looking at people. For example, someone sees a Muslim walking around and notices that they are Muslim , in that persons mind they are automatically a terrorist. Everyone is always being judged by someone, either at school or in a public place, its happening.

Major Events of Women's Rights in America

There have been many events in America causing women to gain more and more rights that men had. In 1920, The league of women voters formed and the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote. During 1938, The United States started to uphold minimum wage regardless of sex, thanks to the Fair Labor Standards Act. In 1953, a women branches were starting to get established in the military. 1955 was when Rosa Parks refused to vacate a "Whites only" bus seat in Montgomery Alabama. This started the courage for blacks and whites to stand together to fight segregation. In 1971 was finally the first public "Speak out: against rape." Finally, during 2000, CBS agreed to pay eight million dollars to work out a sex discrimination lawsuit on the behalf of 200 women.

Women Are Being Treated Differently Than Men in America Today

Today, it might not be as noticeable but women are still being treated differently than men. For example, women are found to not be as trustworthy as men are. Also, if a man gets anger, people think of him as strong. Then in a women gets angry and shows it, they are known as being too emotional. More than half of female students get judged on only their appearance and clothes, where are men get judged, if at all, by mainly their personality. Another thing that really separates men and women in sex. If a man sleeps with a lot of women, others think of him as really cool. Although, if a women sleeps with a lot of other men, shes considered a "Piece of trash."In a lot of political jobs, women reports that they are looked down on a lot more than the men are and their opinions aren't taken seriously.

Women are looked down on more by men in the world today

Today, there are many women in danger throughout the world. There are some poor countries mainly in the middle East that hold lives that are unbearable for women. In many of these countries where women are allowed to get an education, parents cant let them. If a women is sent to school there is a big possibility they could not come back because of kidnapping or rape. In Afghanistan least 87% of women will admit to experiencing some kind of domestic violence throughout their lives. They are not allowed to own any weapons, making them defenseless. The women can not even control who they marry, making the violence to be even more common.

There are many key people fighting for women rights today

Malala Yousafzai was born in 1997 and is part of a leading advocate for women. Wants complete rights for education in Pakastain. She has survived two assassination attempts.

Billie Jean King was born in 1943. She is one of the greatest tennis players of all time and os fighting for equal pay among all women.

Judy Goldsmith was born in 1938. She is a women activist and president of national organization for women. All three of these women are making a difference and helping to put an end to women discrimination, making this world a better place.

The discrimination happening in the world have many connection with the characters from the book "Make Lemonade"

In the book make Lemonade, Jolly, who is a 17 year old mother of two kids looses her job. She lost her job, even though she works the same decency as other workers but she got fired. This happens today with many employees around the United States. Also the reason why Jolly had kids were becasue of men taking advantage of her. All around the world today men are taking advantage of women, getting them pregnant and then leave like nothing ever happend. This is exactly what happened to Jolly.
