On Saturday, the entire state of Indiana got it's own version of FROZEN as roads became treacherous thanks to "The Snow Queen" better known as Mother Nature. The good news? All Brickie teams were able to compete and make it home safely thanks to some OUTSTANDING bus drivers and transportation staff!! Overall, it was a FULL first week back for Hobart with swimming, diving, wrestling and hoops all in action!
Still worried about the weather? Let It Go ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Wrestling
You guessed it ... the Brickie wrestlers had TWWWOOOOOOOOOO meets this week!
Back on December 11th, Hobart took 2nd place at the Tom Cameron Invite over at Merrillville High School after going 4-1 on the day. One of our opponents at the invite was Kankakee Valley and our boys CAGED up the Kougars and won 65-15. Fast forward to Tuesday and it was Hobart vs. KV again ... this time down in DeMotte. Different day ... same result as once again our boys PINNED down the conference foe and earned a convincing 58-18 VICTORY!! With the regular season NCC round-robin competition complete, the Brickies are 5-0 AGAIN, which assures us of at least a tie for the conference title ... for the 8th straight year! Still, we don't like to share, so Hobart will go for the outright championship next Saturday at the NCC Conference meet hosted by Lowell!
IHSWCA TEAM STATE
Saturday, Franklin Community High School served as the host for the IHSWCA Class 3A TEAM STATE competition. Hobart earned an invite for the 2nd year in a row ... and just the 3rd time in school history!
Hobart was paired against top-seeded Indianapolis Roncalli in the quarterfinals. Junior Jacob Simpson got the Brickies off to an exciting start with a PIN at 182! Classmates Trevor Schammert & Donovan Ruiz ... along with freshman Seth Aubin ... would also secure individual victories, but ultimately the Rebels were too much and won 54-18.
The Bricks faced Floyd Central next in the consolation bracket. This one was a BATTLE!! Hobart won 7 of the 14 matches ... each team was matching the other, it was literally PIN for PIN!! Unfortunately, the Highlanders secured 1 more pin that our boys and outscored us 42-39 in the closest match of the day in Class 3A.
In the final competition of the day, Mishawaka was the opponent and this one also went down to the wire! Hobart jumped out to an early 22-0 lead ... then the Cavemen stormed back to take a 31-28 lead. The Brickies turned to Simpson @ 182 who secured a PIN midway through the 2nd period to put Hobart back in the lead at 34-31!! Then it was senior Justin Sawyer @ 195 who extended the Brickie lead to 40-31 with a THRILLING PIN before the 2nd period buzzer!! Mishawaka won the final match, but it was too little, too late as the Brickies WON 40-34!!
The Brickies wrestled their butts off on Saturday and finished 7th in the STATE! Schammert & Simpson went undefeated (3-0) and look poised to make deep post-season runs ... Ruiz, Sawyer, Aubin, junior Jonny McGill and senior Alex Pickett notched two wins each ... and everyone gained valuable experience against the BEST in Class 3A from around the state.
Our boys SHINED on the big stage and represented HHS extremely well in terms of their GRIT & TOUGHNESS ... two vital traits to carry while navigating the #Brickrode. The overall success of our kids' experience at Team State and the growth our young guys showed ... improving each round throughout the competition ... sets the stage for an EXCITING next 4 weeks and hopefully some post-season hardware!
Hobart is 14-3 on the season, 5-0 in the NCC, and back in action this week with home contests against Hammond Morton (Wednesday) and the IHSWCA Class 4A STATE CHAMPION Crown Point Bulldogs (Friday). If I were you, I'd get there early :)
Let's Go Bricks!!
#BRICKRODE

DIVING
On Saturday, the Brickies hosted the 1st EVER Hobart Diving Invitational! Competing schools were Chesterton, Merrillville, LaPorte and our Brickies. This was a full 11-dive meet to help prepare these student athletes for the kind of competition they will see when the post-season begins in a few weeks. Well ... as they have done all year ... our BRICKS SHINED BRIGHT!!! The girls put 4 divers in the top 5 overall places and the boys finished 2nd ... ALL of our divers scored LIFETIME BESTS!!
CONGRATULATIONS to senior Sydney Arias for winning the overall title on the girls side and for the Lady Brickies for earning the TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP in this inaugural event!! Junior Daeges Morgan was 2nd ... senior Autumn Turley finished 4th and classmate Morgan Sanches 5th!
Sophomore Ethan Robles was the lone Brickie boy competing and he SOARED to a 2nd place finish!
THANK YOU to Coach Katie Rinas, Coach Eli Mercado and Coach Ken for putting on such a FANTASTIC invitational!!

Sydney Arias is the overall Hobart Diving Invite CHAMPION!

Sophomore Ethan Robles is 2nd place!

Basketball
Due to a COVID issue with another team, the Lady Brickies just had one contest on the schedule this past week ... a Friday night trip to Highland against the Lady Trojans. Highland entered Friday's contest on a roll after winning 7 straight games ... our girls were playing their 1st game since winning the Hobart Holiday Hoopfest just before New Year's. Unfortunately, this one was all Highland as their stifling defense held our girls to their lowest point total of the season. The Lady Trojans controlled the game from start to finish and sent Hobart home with a disappointing 52-20 defeat. Back in 1961, The Shirelles told us that "Mama said there'd be days like this". Fortunately, the Lady Brickies will get 3 chances this upcoming week to flip the script and get back on track.
The Lady Brickies are 7-8 overall and 0-4 in NCC play. Our girls will travel to Chesterton on Tuesday and then go back-to-back Friday-Saturday. LET'S GO LADIES!! YOU GOT THIS!!
#SHEGOTGAME
Boys
On Wednesday, Hobart hosted former NCC rival Griffith in their first game of the new year. During the opening 8 minutes, the Brickies played some TENACIOUS D-D-D-DEFENSE and jumped out to an 18-10 lead! Sophomore Jevan Andrews actually matched the Panther output with 10 points of his own! In the 2nd quarter, the two teams went back-and-forth as the pace remained at a high level ... Hobart went into the locker room leading 35-24! As frantic as the 1st half of play was at times, the 2nd half slowed down as Hobart tried to close the door on any chance of a Panther win. Each time it looked like the Bricks would have control, Griffith would rally and stay in it. Fortunately, our boys made the plays they needed to down the stretch and secured the 50-43 VICTORY! Junior Keith Mullins notched a double-double - 11 points and 12 rebounds! Andrews added 10pts and the freshmen combo of Jayme Hairston (9pts) and Noah Ehrlich (8pts) kept the Brickie offensive attack balanced in the win.
Friday, the Westville Blackhawks made their way to The Friendly City for the 1st time in more than two decades. Both the Blackhawks and Brickies were riding 2-game winning streaks ... something had to give for one of them at this year's SILENT NIGHT game! Westville controlled the 1st quarter of play and held a 15-4 advantage. The Brickies WORK WORK WORKed for good looks against the Blackhawk zone all night, but just couldn't buy a basket and trailed 28-14 at the break. Unfortunately, things didn't get much better in the 2nd half and Westville left town after handing our boys a tough 63-43 defeat.
After splitting a pair of games this past week, the Brickies are an even 5-5 on the year. Hobart will lace them up again on Saturday @ Illiana Christian. GOOD LUCK BOYS!!
#MAKETHEMBELIEVE

Bowling
What makes this even more INCREDIBLE is that BOTH advanced by just 1 PIN!! The girls defeated LaPorte 336-335 for the TITLE! For the boys, it came down to the last ball in the last frame of the last game and anchor Tyler Rachau bowled a STRIKE to earn 3rd place over rival Chesterton by 1 PIN!!!
The REGIONAL competition will be held in Michigan City on Saturday, January 15th.
GOOD LUCK!!!
