Libya's Government
Libya operates under a transitional government. This is a type of government which is intended only to be temporary, which runs things while a more permanent government framework is being designed.
Roots of imperialism
The European country that imperialized Libya is Italy. Italy created new factories and brought the knowledge of modern technology which Libya lacked. Italy built railroads connecting factories with villages and cities in Libya. Italian imperialism in Libya started in 1911 and was characterized by a major struggle with Muslim native Libyans that lasted to 1931. African societies put up various forms of resistance against the attempt to colonize their countries and impose foreign domination. By the early twentieth century much of Africa, except Ethiopia and Liberia, had been colonized by European powers.
The Road to Independence in Libya
Libya achieved their independance on December 24,1951. After years of local resistance to the Italian occupation, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on November 21,1949 granting Libya its independance no later than January 1,1952. Also, the United Nations was to keep a watchful eye on the internal development of Libya and was to be fully informed by reports presented by its commissioner.
