West Elementary

September 2016

Welcome Back!!!!

West Elementary students and staff are back and we are all looking forward to an amazing new school year. There has already been so many exciting things taking place at our school. Our students are having a great year with their new teachers and those teachers already have fallen in love and set high expectations for their classrooms. At West Elementary, we believe that EVERY student is important and that EVERY student will make a difference!

What is happening in our classrooms?

West Elementary loves our students and our classroom teachers. The first couple of months of school have been extremely busy. Check out all that is happening:

Kindergarten has been VERY busy since school started! We had "ABC Boot Camp" for the first few weeks, where we concentrated on all 26 letters! Now, we will begin focusing on each individual letter and even start to blend sounds together to make words! During math, we are learning all about numbers (recognizing them, writing them, and counting them). We have also started addition to five! We are so excited to be going on our first field trip to the Pumpkin Patch! We will get to pet animals, climb the straw crawl, take a hayride, and pick our own pumpkins. We are discussing the fall season a lot so we will be able to recognize the signs we see on our trip. Kindergarten is a lot of work, but a lot of FUN!

First grade has been busy working on narrative writing about the fair. We have also been working on adding and subtracting within 10. We will be visiting the Chattnooga Zoo at Warner Park on Friday, September 30th!

Second grade is learning how to write narratives, all about nouns, and we all went to the BEECH at Bridgestone for a field trip. It was great!

In third grade, we are working on biography projects. We are learning to write opinion essays. In math, we are learning how multiplication and division are related.

Fourth grade had a wonderful visit from Mr. Hix who brought his planeterium to West. We enjoyed learning all about the stars and constellations. In reading, we just finished Charlotte's Web and are hard at work on narrative writing. In math, we have been learning all about place value and word problems. In social studies, we have been progressing through American history starting with prehistoric Native Americans and going through the exploration of the New World.

Fifth grade has been super busy as well. In ELA, we finished narrative writing and are preparing for the transition to informative writing. In math, we have been working with decimals and place value. The Civil War has been the focus of our social studies lessons as well as preparing for our mock election. Cells, ecosystems, and photosynthesis has our brains learning all kinds of new science information. We are looking forward to starting 4H and our D.A.R.E. classes soon. We are also very proud of our cheerleaders and basketball teams.
