OIL
Oil is a unique natural resources and can be used in many different ways. It is a non-renewable resource that may eventually run out. In this Smore I will explain why we need oil, the process of harvesting and extracting oil, impacts that happen to people and the environment because of the process of harvesting/using/ extracting oil, and what can be done to reduce the severity of the negative 'impacts' given that the 'impacts' of harvesting/using/extracting are negative.
1. A Brief Description of Oil
Oil is a viscous liquid derived from petroleum it is also any neutral, non polar chemical substance. An oil is a non-renewable resource because oil is produced from the remains of animals and plant over the millions of years. A renewable resource is replaced in an acceptable amount of time like: days to years. Oil takes millions of years to form. Oil can be used in fuel, lubrication, and the manufacture of plastics, paints, transfer heat and many other materials. Oil comes from the ground and needs to harvested for use. In Canada much of our oil is mixed in with soil and is found in Alberta which is the 3rd largest oil reserve in the world. The largest supplier of oil in the world are Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.
These items relate to Oil
Fuel
Fuel is a substance that is created from Oil. A fuel is created when the Oil is pumped out of the Earth and is shipped to an Oil Refinery in a oil tanker. Then the Oil is converted into fuel. It can also be converted into different things such as: Gasoline, Ethane, diesel fuel, etc.
Plastic
Plastic is a material that has a little oil in it along with other synthetic materials, also non-synthetic organic materials that are moldable. Plastic is made up of many different chemicals but it is a mostly natural object.
Paints
The pigments of colour can be very easily be suspended in Oil. Which makes it easier to paint mediums for the artwork. Oil Paint was first made in 650 AD

This is a little prezi on why we need to use oil.
3. The process of harvesting/using/extracting the resource
Harvesting Oil
There are many ways to harvest oil. One way of harvesting oil is harvesting it from Oil sands. They have oil sands dug up and then they take the oil and suck out all the oil from the oil sands. That is one way harvesting oil from something.
Using Oil
We usually oil when we convert it into sources we can use. Example: Oil can be changed into petroleum which we can use to make a vehicle operate. At a gas pump the petroleum is inserted into the gas tank and then the vehicle uses the petroleum energy to work.
Extracting Oil
We extract oil by drilling a hole in the surface of the earth. Then you have to insert a pipe in the hole that you drilled. Then the pipe that you inserted in the hole will extract all the oil and it will be stored after that
4. impacts that harvesting/using/extracting this resource has on people and the environment
Harvesting
Before ________________________________After Rip the Land for Oil
In order to extract the oil from the land larges areas need to be cleared resulting in the destruction of animal habitats, and plants as well as destroying the natural environment
This can cause animal and plant species previously inhabiting this area to be endangered and changes the green space into wastelands.
Using
Car's Create Pollution
We use oil for many reasons. The thing we use that causes impacts on the environment the most are cars. We use cars for our every day living to travel to places we need to go to. When we use cars which runs on petroleum it releases smoke in the air from the exhaust. It causes impact on the people because all the smoke from the exhaust is carbon monoxide which can cause harm to people's lungs.
Extracting
Oil Spills
When we extract oil from places such as water we sometimes create oil spills. This occurs when they are extracting the oil from beneath the surface and they have to dig deep then the tube they extract it with cracks. When the tube cracks all the oil comes out and enters the oceans. When the oil enters the ocean it kills a lot of animals and that has a big impact on the environment. This causes great impacts on the environment, it could cause a specie to become endangered or even extinct.
What can be done to reduce the severity of the negative 'impacts' given that the 'impacts' of harvesting/using/extracting are negative.
