Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 11/7 - 11/10
Let's Honor our Veterans on 11/11!
Fundations:
This week we continued our work with base words and suffixes as well as multi-syllablic words. We took our Unit 5 Assessment and are looking forward to Unit 6.
Literacy:
This week our focus was on identifying "text features" that can be found in Nonfiction books. Some of these are - table of contents, index, glossary, headings, captions, labels, etc. We also worked on the 5 W's and the H when we read. This reading skill matches our Common Core Standard RI.2. I can identify who, what, where, when, why and how to answer questions about a text. We practiced this skill when we read biographies and then answered those questions in our Reading Notebooks. Ask about the famous person your child read about this week...they will impress you with their knowledge!
Math: This week we worked on identifying coins, knowing their value, and also counting groups of coins. This is CCSS 2.MD.8 - I can identify and give the value of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. We need lots of practice with this skill. If you have a pocket/wallet full of coins, have your child count it for you.
Writing Workshop: We are beginning to choose our first topic for our Information Writing piece. We have brainstormed topics we already know something about and/or something we have a great interest in. We chose nonfiction books on our visit to the LRC that fit our interests and some students have even done some research on their own or gone to the public library for some more resource books. As you read these books with your child, please point out those all-important text features. It's a great way to smoothly integrate our reading and writing curriculums.
