Welcome Back to In Person Learning
Dear Families, Care-givers, and Community,
Being together safely, in person, cannot be beat for Deep Learning. The weeks leading up to next Tuesday have felt like the arrival of a holiday for us: the excitement among staff and students is palpable. In fact, just this past week, we had two students ask if they could come to school to be with their friends who were permitted to attend during our Remote Week. Having children ask to come to school is one of sprinkles of light that has come during this pandemic.
On that point, this year's pandemic has led to an unprecedented loss of learning time for our children. Despite the challenges, we feel that we’ve maximized the opportunities to reach children in new ways. With full in person learning starting on Tuesday January 19th, we will celebrate every minute to ensure our children learn how to read, love reading, and read at excellent levels for their age before the arrival of summer.
We are excited to mobilize our whole community to meet our goals to help our children have an amazing future: All children meet their “stretch goals” in reading. “Stretch Goals” are goals that are higher than what children typically achieve in a given amount of time. We have organized our time, our instruction, our support, and our enthusiasm to ensure ALL children are reading, writing, thinking, and being strong citizens - each and every minute between now and the summer. Toward that end, you can help by making reading and writing a priority at home and ensuring children attend in whatever ways are available (in person or remote if your child is quarantined and able to participate). Strong attendance will help us meet this goal.
You can also can also help us by having your child watch the following video before arriving to school on Tuesday:
Thank you all - we know how hard it has been to get children to school (or to Google Meets). You are ALL our heroes!

You Might Like to Know…
If your Child is Quarantined During the Second Semester:
This semester, if your child does not appear for a scheduled class or Google Meet, they will be marked absent...initially. This marking could be changed however, if:
You have arranged for another way for your child to demonstrate they learned from the class that day (for example, by watching a video made by the teacher)
Your child completed the assignments to the satisfaction of the teacher.
If these are the case, we can re-mark the attendance, later, for that day as “present.” In short, if your child misses anything, we’ll call. If you had technology problems or just couldn’t juggle the day, let us know! We want to support you during this time.
The UPE School Accountability Committee (SAC) Meeting is Wednesday, January 20 at 5 PM. Here’s the Link: meet.google.com/emi-hkkb-crt
Agenda: We’ll be brainstorming and planning around Reading and Writing - How to engage our whole community in innovative ways to ensure ALL children are outstanding readers and writers.
We are excited to see you ALL on Tuesday morning!
