ENERGY CONVERSIONS
Renee Kerr
Thermal energy
- particles move faster at at higher temperatures than lower temperatures
- faster the particles move the faster the kinetic energy and the greater the objects thermal energy
- joule is the unit used to measure thermal energy
- thermal energy can be transferred 3 ways: convection, conduction, radiation
Chemical energy
-form of potential energy because it depends on the position and arrangements of the atoms in a compound
-is released as a chemical reaction
-once chemical energy is released from a substance, that substance is transformed into a totally different substance
Electrical Energy
- electrons are the negatively charged particles of atoms
- the electric energy of moving electrons is used to do work
-the electrical energy you use in your home comes from power plants
-electrons in wires can transfer energy to different parts inside a device
This picture explains electrical energy because the plug in is converting it's energy into the cords which is giving energy to whatever object it's attached to
Sound Energy
-sound is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate
-energy is transferred through a substance wave
-the sound waves mover through the air
Light Energy
Light energy is produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles
-keeps us warm and lets us see the world
-not all light energy can be seen
-light vibrations can cause energy to be transmitted
Nuclear Energy
Nuclear energy is energy that comes from changes in the nucleus of an atom
-Atoms store a lot of potential energy because of the positions of the particles in the nucleus of the atom
-The energy given off by the sun comes from nuclear energy
-Without nuclear energy from the sun, life on earth would't be possible
