Respiratory Illness Season is Here!
How can you and your student(s) avoid becoming sick?
- All adults and children ages 6 months and older should get the flu vaccine. Flu vaccines have been around for nearly 80 years and are safe and effective. Vaccines prevent most infections and reduce risk of complications that may require hospitalization. A new flu vaccine is needed every year. Updated COVID boosters are available for everyone ages 5 and up. Your child’s pediatrician should be able to provide both, as can area pharmacies. Please call the nurse if you need other options and we can enroll you in the Wellness center for vaccines and other acute care.
- Encourage your students to wash their hands properly and often and avoid touching their face. Use sanitizer at school often after touching shared surfaces.
- Encourage proper nutrition and hydration, regular meals with fruits and vegetables and increase water intake to help keep your body well.
- Get plenty of sleep. High schoolers should get between 8-10 hours of sleep. ALSO proper sleep hygiene is KEY. Please click on the following link for more support on this topic. Sleep Hygiene - Chesapeake High (bcps.org)
- Check your student’s temperature if they seem sluggish, flushed, hot, are shivering or complain of feeling sick
- Keep sick students home. If your student has a new cough, sore throat, fever of 100.0 or higher, chills, body aches, fatigue, vomiting or diarrhea they need to stay home from school. They can return when they have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. Vomiting and diarrhea should be gone for 24 hours and your child should feel well enough to participate in activities for a full school day. If you suspect covid or flu, please test your student prior to returning to school. Call the Health Suite with any positive results. .
- Make sure you have a plan to pick up your student if they become sick during the school day. Contact the office staff to make sure emergency contacts are up to date and the office has a working phone number for you, including work numbers.
- Call the school Health Office and speak with Nurse Kisser or Ms. Cathy with any questions (443) 809-0070, or email Nurse Kisser at akisser@bcps.org at your convenience.
Please see the attachments for information regarding the flu and measures you can take to protect yourself and your family. Talk with your health care provider or pharmacist regarding new updated vaccine recommendations for this season.

Students can get medical care at The CHS Wellness Center
All students can visit our Nurse Practitioner onsite, here at CHS, on Wednesdays (8:30 am - 2:45 pm) and Thursdays mornings (8:00 to 11:30 am) as long as they have filled out paperwork for the Wellness Program. The Baltimore County Department of Health has placed wellness centers throughout the county at various schools to provide extended health care to their community of students. The Nurse Practitioner can provide sports physicals, wellness physicals, treats acute illnesses (such as flu, strep, ear infections, skin issues, and more) as well as prescribe necessary prescription medications, administer immunizations, help co-manage chronic health problems (such as asthma, diabetes and other health conditions) with your child’s doctor if needed. The Nurse Practitioner can see your student during the school day (Wednesday/Thursdays), saving you transportation time and money.
Parental consent is required for your student to receive health care from the Wellness Center, and when needed, an appointment will be scheduled during the school day. Please complete and return the wellness application packet on the forms page and return to any staff member in the Nurse’s Health Suite if you would like to take advantage of this opportunity.
If you have any questions about the wellness program or any medical concerns in general please contact Nurse Kisser at akisser@bcps.org
