Thank you for your continued support of our schools! The best is yet to come!
5th Grade Basketball Game
On Friday, December 21st we had our first ever "Staff vs. 5th Grade Students" basketball game. Thank you to Miss Creonte for organizing this event and to our volunteers for helping to make this event a success! Coaches: Mark Dellasanta and Kevin Norris. Referees: Greg Taylor and Mike Alario. Scorekeepers: Nick Aveni and Devin Norris. The final score was 42 to 43 with the students winning!
MHS Morning Drop-Off Routine
Please remember the following safety guidelines when dropping off your children at MHS in the morning.
- Wait until you pull up to the curb for a staff member to greet your children before letting them out of your vehicle.
- Have your children walk in front of the car before pulling away.
Thank you for helping us to keep your children safe!
Greetings from Kindergarten!
The entire kindergarten team would like to express our great appreciation for the tremendous acts of kindness and support we received from families during the holiday season.
Our Kindergarten Family Holiday Sing-a-long and classroom parties were both a huge success. Thank you to all families that attended and also to those who helped to support these wonderful events. We hope you had as much fun as we did!
We are extremely eager to participate in another upcoming STEM challenge. This month our students will design structures that will help the gingerbread man cross the river. Our students continue to learn new ways to explore, create and share ideas.
Please kindly remember to send your child with labeled hats, mittens and boots daily. We will continue to have outside recess as the weather permits.
Lastly, we warmly welcome donations of tissues and Clorox wipes for our classroom. Again, thank you all for your support.
We wish all our families a healthy and happy 2019!
Happy New Year from Ms. Creonte
K-1: This week kindergarten and first graders are going to learn how to build “igloos”, using hula hoops. Students must work together to accomplish this goal! Once their igloo is built, they will be given various challenges to try out. We will also be doing some review of how to move safely in the gym while playing a game! January/February is a busy time for K+1! We will be focusing on jumping and landing. This includes jumping and landing on 2 feet, landing on 1 foot, taking off on one foot, taking off on two feet, jumping further distances, jump roping, as well as skipping. We will be playing lots of activities that involve jumping while using lots of imagination!
2-5: Whenever we return from a school vacation I think it is important for students to play an activity that involves team work, communication, cooperation and trust. This week students are learning a new game called “Battleship!” Students must work together to try and get down the other team’s pins, all while being challenged. Throughout January and February, we will be working on our bowling unit, hockey unit, and a brand new unit, cup stacking. Cup stacking helps with focus, concentration, agility, as well as hand-eye coordination. There are many different activities to do with cup stacking. I am very excited to introduce it this year!
Grade 4 News!!
As we return from winter break and begin the “unofficial” second half of the school year, fourth grade is continuing to focus on building the skills we started earlier this school year. In the same way a snowman is built piece by piece, fourth graders have been building on their writing paragraph by paragraph, to create longer stories. The subject of their first narrative was based on the story “Snowmen at Night”. Students were asked to write a five paragraph narrative with their own take on what snowmen might do when no one is looking.
In fourth grade math, we have been examining different ways to multiply large numbers. We have also been applying those strategies to real life examples, such as area and perimeter of a room or playground. Fourth grade is full of future civil engineers!
Westminster PTO News:
Our next PTO meeting is this coming Wednesday, January 9th at 6:30 pm in the WES Library. Please mark your calendars! Things tend to sneak up on us this time of year. We’d love to have you get involved in some of our upcoming spring activities and of course the big Fun Run in March. Just a reminder...if you’ve missed other meetings this year it doesn’t matter. Come to meetings whenever you can. It is NOT a requirement of the PTO to attend every meeting. Also, please note you can help with any PTO activity throughout the year even if you can’t make the meetings. We welcome any volunteer.
A huge thank you to Paula Magee of Young at Heart and Danielle Ferguson for putting together last month’s yoga and vendor night. It was a wonderful night and $414.00 was given to our PTO. Thank you to the vendors who attended, to the folks who donated gift baskets for the raffle and to everyone who came out for yoga, shopping and socializing!!!
We are still looking for a few more local businesses to partner with us to sponsor t-shirts for each of our students for our upcoming Fun Run. If you or someone you know may be interested please contact us at jfeeley@awrsd.org or barbd110202@gmail.com. We only have a little bit of time left.
