Borough Assembly Budget meetings
Last year our Borough Assembly passed two important ordinances that supported funding of our school district. The first being that the borough would provide 6.3 mils of the budget to the school district for funding over the next 5 years. This ordinance allowed for additional revenue to the school district as more families moved to the MatSu. Prior to this ordinace we were flat funded even though our student enrollemt was increasing. The second ordinance allows the school district to keep funds for future years if spending did not ooccur that year which would help support deficits in future years. Our Borough Mayor is recommending that the School Distict absorb the cost fo the school bond debt reimbursement that our Govenor is proposing in his budget be passes to local boroughs and cities. This year this amount is $19 million.
Below are two pictures showing the difference in funding for education. The first slide shows what the district was going to receive with the ordinance that passed last year. There are two lines on the pictures. The bottom line shows the minimum amount of revenue the borough is required to provided the district per state statute and the top line is the maximum amount the district could provided per state statute. You can see histoically we have been in the mid to high 70% of maixumum allowed contributions. Our borough funds our district lower than those in the big 5 school districts in the state. You can see if the school bond debt was passed on to the school distict what funds this district would have for next year. This would be a 30% per pupil cut in spending and fund the district at 54% of the allowable amount. This will dramatically impact the district and how we operate.
The Borough Assembly has 3 meetings this week for public comment. They are at the following locations and times:
