KERBY NEWSLETTER
January 10, 2020
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
The hope and opportunity that comes with a new year is always a great motivator. We started our new year at Kerby with a reminder and refresh of Kerby rules and expectations. It was a great way to reinforce what we already do well and recommit ourselves to what we need to improve. Check out the leader in me section of the newsletter for ideas on how to prioritize what is important to you this year.
This month is a mid-year check in for students in math and reading. Students will take the NWEA maps assessment as well as other common assessments to measure progress toward grade level standards. Thank you for your commitment to your child's education. Great things are happening at Kerby!
Best,
Ms. Bourke

LEADER DOGS- CUB SCOUT ASSEMBLY
PUPPIES ARE COMING TO KERBY
For those who are visually impaired, the loss of sight is only the beginning of a life-changing reality. The simplest daily tasks become daunting.
Leader Dogs for the Blind provides people with the tools and training to reintroduce a life of independence, confidence and companionship; most notably, with man’s best friend!
Please join us for a special event sponsored by Cub Scout Pack 481 featuring the puppies in training from Leader Dogs for the Blind on Wednesday, January 15 at 3:45pm in the Kerby gym. You will learn how these amazing dogs help individuals with sight impairment achieve success. This event will serve as a kick-off for a school-wide fundraiser “Pennies for Puppies,” which will support the impactful work of this wonderful organization.
Children are required to be accompanied by an adult. There will be an opportunity to interact with the puppies. A bake sale will occur before and after the event with all proceeds donated to the organization.

DISTRICT WIDE UNITY IN DIVERSITY MEETINGS
Dear GP Community! Our Parents For Unity In Diversity Committee is happy to announce that the district-wide parent meetings for this year will take place on Jan. 28th (in the Mason Elementary Library) and April 13th (in the Defer Elementary Library) from 6-7:30 pm. The meetings will be facilitated by Ginni Winters and the topic of our conversations will be centered around how we can help our community heal and become better during this time of transition for all our students. We are asking all participants to come prepared to brainstorm ways we can make our community better for everyone involved. Please consider joining us for these rich conversations; our students and community deserve it!
Thanks for your time,

LEADER IN ME
January is a great time to reflect on our "big rocks" and ensure that we are focusing on what is most important. When you know what you value (Habit 2) it is easier to prioritize what is most important to you when life starts to fill in the gaps. Habit 3 teaches us to focus on what is most important first. We all have a lot of things we want to do and many that we have to do throughout our day. When we focus on Habit 3 we think about what would happen if we didn't do our chores or spend one on one time with important people in our lives? What would happen if we didn't scroll on Facebook or play video games for a day? As a family you might write down 3 big rocks and 3 little rocks and then decide how you can prioritize your time so that you stay focused on those big rocks.
