HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
HARVARD EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM
25 WHS sophomores partnered with Harvard's Radcliffe Emerging Leaders Program to create social justice projects with assistance from Harvard College mentors. The projects highlighted several student led generated ideas such as, prayer spaces during lunch times, development of a climate change advisory, women in STEM allocating books for elementary schools, and identity support Groups that lead our students to visit the Hosmer Elementary School to discuss race and identity and provide students with snacks from around the world.
FIELD TRIP TO LYNDRA THERAPEUTICS
On April 26th, 20 students from our biology and chemistry classes went on a field trip to Lyndra Therapeutics as part of the CoLAB initiative at the high school. Lyndra is a biotech company local to Watertown that is developing a model way of delivering drugs. Students chatted with professionals, went on a tour of their lab, and did a few activities--including a competition where they got to see who made the best prototype of Lyndra's novel delivery method.
HAMMER HEAD
Mr. MacLaughlin's English classes recently hosted his sister Nina, who spoke to students about her memoir Hammer Head (the story of her decade spent working as a carpenter in the Boston area) and her story collection Wake, Siren (a retelling of Ovid's Metamorphoses). She led the students in a writing exercise and answered questions about how she brings ideas from the brain to the page.
