Read. Write. Science!

Three Great Things to Know:
Summer Adventure Round-Up This summer, travel to Costa Rica, the National Museum of Natural History, on an ocean research vessel, and more! It's time to apply for teacher summer adventures. I've been highlighting various (FREE) workshops and trips on my blog, and have prepared a round-up of my favorites. | Word Read Aloud Day (AKA free author visits) February 16 is World Read-Aloud Day (WRAD) and a variety of authors offer free Skype visits to celebrate the day. Kate Messner has a list of authors who still have appointments available here. And any day you want, you can share "Storytime From Space" with an astronaut. | Class Pets and Supplies--FREE You want to have a classroom pet. You know how good they are for kids. But they are expensive. Pets in the Classroom grants to the rescue! If you are a preK-8 teacher, you can apply for a grant to purchase a classroom pet and supplies, and reapply annually to keep your pet’s food bowl stocked. (And yes, this is my pet rat.) |

Reading and Writing in Science
If your school is looking for staff development to implement the Once Upon books or simply to improve reading and writing in the content areas (without using the books), please get in touch! I help teachers use literacy to support their science (or social studies) instruction, and vice versa. I also address scientific argumentation (making claims and supporting them with evidence). I especially love working with groups of teachers over time as they move from traditional instructional methods to engaging, inquiry based work.
