We will send updates on curriculum & upcoming events weekly.
Reminders for this week.
- Proctors- We have begun our annual search for EOG proctors. We need help most on 5/25, 5/26, and 5/31 beginning first thing in the morning. Proctors are required to be with each test administrator simply to monitor that everything is going by the script and to allow the administrator to do with any emergency that could arise.
- Yearbook Orders- Yearbook orders are due Thursday, April 13th. Yearbooks are $15 and students should have an envelope in which money should be returned.
- Spring Break- Spring Break begins Friday, April 14th. Students return Monday April 24th.
5th Grade Curriculum
We are continuing to work on specific skills in reader's workshop with a focus on main idea up to Spring Break.
We are also digging deeper into the life of Harriet Tubman. We are researching what her greatest accomplishment would be.
We will be in our data unit until Spring Break. We are examining the growth of children's height. Students have to generate data, graph it, and making generalizations analyzing the data. This unit can throw students who are accustomed to math being a set of procedures and some of these topics require them to come up with their own data.
We have begun our genetics unit and will finish it just prior to Spring Break. Students are learning about acquired and inherited traits. We will examine dominant and recessive genes which can move unobserved traits through generations. The goal is to teach that you do not receive traits from your uncle but you do indirectly from great-grandfather.
