This Week at Winsor

Our Weekly Update

Congratulations to Ms. Burrows

We are thrilled to announce that Ms. Burrows has been named the 2020 Rhode Island Art Education Association (RIAEA) New Art Educator of the Year. As we know, Ms. Burrows exemplifies excellence, consistently helping students to excel in art and design. Students love Art class and the exemplars produced make our hallways vibrant and alluring. In addition, Ms. Burrows has facilitated engineering and design workshops for our students, coordinated a district-wide art show, and been a leader in the coordination of our 5th Grade Flava program. As a community, we are so proud of Ms. Burrows and excited for what is to come.

School Improvement Update

Our SIT team recently met to review our plan for the this year. We will continue to focus on our three main goals:

1. Continue the adoption of the Responsive Classroom Approach. By November of this year, all Winsor educators will be implementing RC in their classroom. This approach engages students, builds pro-social relationships, creates a welcoming culture, and organically dovetails with classroom instruction. Many of our teachers are engaged in a book study group, designed to apply and extend understanding of RC practices.

2. Our team of teachers continues to instruct based upon the curriculum work completed last summer. Teacher teams collaborate regularly to maximize the effectiveness of learning outcomes and teacher pedagogy. As a team of teachers and learners, we will continue to monitor our progress towards curricular and pacing adjustments made last spring.

3. Our school is squarely in the middle of the Collins Writing Approach for year 2. Recently, teachers had the chance to receive professional development from Bill Atwood, a nationally acclaimed writing instructor. This work continues to shape how our students write across subject areas and how we are implementing a K-12 writing approach. The Collins website has an abundance of information and is worthy of your time.

These three overarching goals drive our work. We hope you can meet with us for our next SIT meeting, where further progress steps will be discussed. We will be meeting on Wednesday, October 30th at 3:30pm in the library.

Veteran's Day Assembly

Winsor is looking to honor and thank the veterans within our community on Friday, November 8th at 1:15pm in our cafetorium. Building upon the tremendous success of last year's event, any family or community member that has, or is currently serving in the military is welcome to join us. Winsor has been fortunate to have established a wonderful relationship with the American Legion (Post 64). These fine veterans have taught our 5th Grade students about honoring the flag and will be joining us to honor the women and men that keep all of us safe. Please contact the school with any questions.

Tricounty Workshop

Please join us on Tuesday, October 8th at Smithfield High School at 6:30pm for a district workshop. Tricounty will be presenting a valuable program on building resilience in students. This work helps support the Growth Mindset model we instill within all of our students. Learning to build confidence and strength at an early age fosters confidence and self-efficacy, traits we want all of our students to have.

Thank you for being our partners in education. Have a wonderful weekend!
