National Recovery Month
State Bans Flavored E-Cigarettes
According to the Eaton County Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth Survey, in the 2017-2018 school year, e-cigarettes and vaping devices became the most prevalent substances used by high school students--above alcohol and marijuana for past 30-day use. We are thrilled to announce during National Recovery Month, the governor has made a proclamation to ban sales of flavored e-cigarettes, a giant step forward in curbing the this rising substance use epidemic among teens.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer said on Wednesday this week she has directed the Department of Health and Human Services to issue emergency rules banning the sale of flavored e-cigarettes in the state, making Michigan the first state to take such action.
Ms. Whitmer said she took the action after the state's chief medical executive, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, issued a finding that youth use of e-cigarettes constitutes a public health emergency. The emergency rules will ban the sale of flavored nicotine vaping products in retail stores and online and prohibit what Ms. Whitmer called "misleading marketing of vaping products" such as terms like "clean," "safe" "and healthy." Ms. Whitmer said she also ordered the Department of Transportation to enforce existing law barring the advertising of vapor products on billboards.
"As governor, my number one priority is keeping our kids safe," Ms. Whitmer said in a statement. "And right now, companies selling vaping products are using candy flavors to hook children on nicotine and misleading claims to promote the belief that these products are safe. That ends today. Our kids deserve leaders who are going to fight to protect them. These bold steps will finally put an end to these irresponsible and deceptive practices and protect Michiganders' public health."

Special Recovery Month Educational Event
“Does Addiction Treatment Work?” will be presented on Tuesday September 17, 2019; 7:30pm-9:00pm, by Dr Carl Christensen, MD, PhD, D-FASAM.
Recent publications claim to define research-supported definitive truths about the root causes of addiction and efficacy of treatment modalities; however, conclusions are conflicting and have been subject to divergent interpretations. Feel confused?
Dr. Christensen will review the recent criticisms of treatment for addiction including Twelve Step, residential, and medication assisted therapy, the scientific studies that do and do not support their use and other controversial issues.
This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual education series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about substance use disorders, recovery, family and related issues; and to dispel the myths, misinformation, secrecy, shame and stigma that prevent people with addiction and their families from getting help and getting well.
