Oakhurst Weekly

September 1, 2022

From the Principal

Greetings Oakhurst Family,

I know you are looking forward to Labor Day weekend! Even though summer ends September 21, Labor Day usually marks the unofficial end of summer. I am sure many of you will travel to a beach to frolic in bodies of water and sink your toes in the sand; gather up your courage and scream to the top of your lungs on wild amusement park rides; jump in your vehicle to take a road trip and "soak up the local culture" in towns/cities along the way; or fire up the grill to cook delicious food, invite over family and friends. All of these activities create great memories.

Memories are so important. We make memories every day of our lives, and that is what we are doing at Oakhurst. Our first Community Circle was held today and it was amazing! We are so proud of our children. They were engaged, well-behaved, and came in full force dressed in our school colors. I would like to give a "ROUND OF APPLAUSE" to these outstanding students - Caleb, Mary Jane, Asher and Ella for serving as hosts; and Mrs. White's class for singing and leading us in two songs! A special "SHOUT OUT" goes out to these students who were recognized for being kind and responsible - Marshall, Emmie, Aida and Kuken! I would also like to give KUDOS to staff members Erin Guerrieri and Cindy Aldridge for planning and coordinating this wonderful event; Argean Vokes for teaching Ms. White's students the songs; and Hazel Gibbon who was the cutest "Oakie" ever! We also recognized the following students who are celebrating birthdays Labor Day weekend - Oliver, Everett, Henry, and Parker. Again, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" to each of you! I would also like to thank all the parents, family members, and friends of our students for joining us to make this wonderful memory!

We also have fond memories of staff members who have left our school. As mentioned in last week's newsletter, Nurse Dawn Durham retired. New memories will now be made with interim nurse Lakeisha Mclean continuing to provide medical care for our precious children. Nurse Mclean has been a nurse for several years and said, "I love working with children. I was so excited to be welcomed into Oakhurst!" Students have already "welcomed" Nurse Mclean with their visits to the clinic from everything to saying hello with smiling faces, or faces filled with tears because they need medical attention. We are happy to have Nurse Mclean join the Oakhurst Family!

In closing, I'd like to give you one of my favorite quotes from none other than Winnie the Pooh..."We didn't realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun." Yes, Oakhurst Family, it's such a joy working here! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!

Yours in service,

Sharon Gay

From the AP

Hi Owls,

Community circle really warmed my heart today because love was surely in the air. Here are a few tidbits about upcoming events.

CogAT Testing - We will test all 1st graders on Tu-Fri 9/6-9/8 and Mon 9/12 from 8:50am-9:50am each morning. There is no need to prepare in advance.

Safety Drill - This month’s safety drill will be a practiced lockdown. The children will have instruction in advance of the drill so that they are prepared and comfortable knowing that this is a drill and they are not in danger.

Curriculum Night -We want to make sure that families with children in more than one class have a chance to see multiple teachers tonight so our classroom teachers will offer the same information in two different sessions. The schedule is pictured below. Please make sure to wear a mask.

Mosquitos: There has been an increase in the presence of mosquitos on our property. Many students are seeking nurse support for bug bites. We will be asking our contracted pest control to use a botanical spray on a day where students will be off property for more than 24hrs. You may want to consider using a bug repellent of your choice on your students.

Coach's Corner

Hello Oak Families!

The first month of school is behind us and there are many amazing things on the horizon. One way that Oakhurst families can learn more about what happens in your child’s school is by attending our Coffee Chats. These monthly sessions are one way we work to help you learn strategies to use at home, learn about curriculum information or school programming, and deepen and broaden your understanding of what it means to be a primary school student at Oakhurst/in CSD. Please see the list of topics and dates/times below. We look forward to seeing you soon!

September 9, 2:00-2:45pm - CSD’s new Grading and Reporting Practices

October 7, 8:30-9:15am - Fostering Mathematical Practices at Home

November 4, 8:30-9:15am - STEAM Skills at Home

December 16, 8:30-9:15am - Enrichment over a School Break

Is there something that you’re interested in learning more about, but you don’t see it on the Coffee Chat list? We value your feedback and are interested in what you’d like to learn more about. Send an email to: Cindy Aldridge, Oakhurst’s Instructional Coach (caldridge@csdecatur.net), and share your ideas for additional topics.

Enjoy the long weekend!
