Grading Guidance for Herndon Magnet School - Updates
- JGradebook is open for the 4th nine weeks.
- You should input grades for the first week of the nine weeks based on the work they did in class that week.
- You MUST input a minimum of one grade per week thereafter.
- The last day for online learning and deadline for assignments to be due is Friday, May 8, 2020. There should be no assignments due after this date.
- Although JGradebook does not close for grades until Monday, May 18, 2020 at midnight, your grades must be finalized in JGradebook no later than Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at midnight. This will allow administration time to run grade reports to double check for possible failures.
- 4th nine weeks grades will be calculated as follows:
- If the 4th nine weeks average is higher than the 3rd nine weeks grade, students will receive the 4th nine weeks average. If the 4th nine weeks average is lower than the 3rd nine weeks grade, students will receive the 3rd nine weeks percentage as their 4th nine weeks grade (Do No Harm).
- Please keep this in mind as we have discussed before, we do not want to artificially inflate a students grade for the year. (e.g. 1st nine weeks = 78/C, 2nd nine weeks = 77/C, 3rd nine weeks = 78/C, 4th nine weeks = 95/A means final grade of B for the year)
- If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Thomas or Miss DePriest.
Preparing for 2020-2021
- Each teacher should compile a list of reading, language, and math standards that were not mastered or taught due to COVID19 closure.
- Each grade level of teachers should meet virtually via Zoom or other platform to discuss and come up with one list of standards for each subject to give to the teachers in the grade above.
- Individually, teachers in the grade above will take the list and determine if those should be addressed during RtI, mini-lessons prior to particular units, taught at the beginning of the year, or will be covered in the regular lessons but may need additional time for mastery.
- Each grade level of teachers should then meet virtually via Zoom to start making plans for 2020-2021. Will you need to make adjustments to the scope and sequence? Planning ahead is going to be critical. We cannot simply "wait and see". We cannot spend 5 weeks at the beginning of the year teaching the skills/lessons that were not taught at the end of this year.
3-8 Teachers
- Each teacher should compile a list of reading, language, and math standards that were not mastered or taught thoroughly due to COVID19 closure.
- Email your list to the teacher above you.
- Once you receive the list, you will determine if those should be addressed during RtI, mini-lessons prior to particular units, taught at the beginning of the year, or will be covered in the lessons and may need additional time for mastery.
- Will you need to make adjustments to the scope and sequence? Planning ahead is going to be critical. We cannot simply "wait and see". We cannot spend 5 weeks at the beginning of the year teaching the skills/lessons that were not taught at the end of this year.
EOY PROCEDURES
EOY Classroom Clean Out
- The school will be open for teachers only (no children allowed) to come and work packing up their student's items and classrooms on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, May 5 - 7, 2020 from 8 AM to 3 PM.
- You must park in the front of the school and report to the office before going to your classroom.
- Your temperature will be checked and recorded. If you have a temperature over 99.6, you will have to leave the premises.
- You must wear gloves and a mask while on campus.
- You should report directly to your room. You should practice 6 feet social distancing at all times if possible. This is NOT a time for socializing and teachers should not gather in the hallways or classrooms.
- During this time, teachers will pack up their student belongings (as explained below).
- Teachers will pack up their classrooms, taking home what they need, stacking tables and desks, covering bulletin boards and computers, etc... for summer.
- Teachers need to compile a list of the items students need to return (text books, instruments, library books, devices, etc...).
- You must check-out through the office when you leave school. The building will close at 3 PM, so you will need to check-out through the office no later than 2:45 PM so that the custodians can disinfect door knobs and other areas once you leave.
Packing up student belongings K-5:
- A paper grocery bag will be provided for each student.
- Label the bags in large print in black marker with the student's first and last names.
- Place all left over supplies and belongings in the bag.
- You may also choose to write a letter for the summer or gift an EOY memento.
- Mrs. Woolfolk suggested providing students with a summer packet of ideas that included writing 3 different types of letters, reading 3 different types of books, etc... Another idea would be to make a Bingo card of things to do and when they get a Bingo, send you a picture of it and you could mail them a congratulations card or small token.
- Additional items that will be placed in the bags - yearbooks, 3rd nine weeks report cards and paper work, class pictures, refund checks, medicines, etc...
Packing up student belongings MS:
- A flexible trash bag and label will be provided for each student.
- Teachers will be given a bank of lockers to clean out and label.
- PE teachers will clean out PE lockers and put the items in the correct trash bag.
- Teachers will remove textbooks, library books, unused community supplies (kleenex, hand sanitizer, etc...) and place in boxes in the hallways.

Bookkeeping
- Mrs. Johnson will be emailing all teachers and staff that have open fundraisers. These must be taken care of when you are here to clean out classrooms on May 5-7
- Class funds must be spent and receipts submitted by Wednesday, May 13.
- Mrs. Johnson will be emailing teachers with an account balance. You can add $100 to this amount given to you by PTSA for teacher appreciation week.
- You may use the money to buy a small token for students for the EOY in lieu of EOY parties.
- Some of you have quite large balances. We encourage you to use the money to buy technology. You can buy a Chromebook for $250 and all-in-one desktops for $400. If you have an older computer running your interactive board, you should look for something new.
If you have any questions about money, please contact Mr. Thomas.
