Principal's Message

Welcome back families! We hope that everyone had a safe and restful Spring Break! As we return to school we have many exciting academic adventures to embark on before the end of the school year. With Spring weather on its way, we will continue to work hard and finish the year strong!

We had a busy March at Monte Vista. Students have been using technology to enhance their classroom work. They have been learning how to pull facts from informational texts, gain additional information for literature circles, and how to use technology for research projects.

Students were also busy at work in their classrooms with activities like marshmallow math, making ancestor dolls, learning about erosion, making leprechaun traps, and art docent projects. Our third graders even had a special visit from our school nurse where they learned about nutrition, healthy eating, and reading food labels.

Students got off campus this month too for some adventures to Rohnert Park Public Safety, the public library, and Ag Day at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. We also had students participate in special events. Three Monte Vista students were chosen as Future Chefs Finalists and competed in a cooking challenge at Lawrence Jones Middle School. We also had a team of Mountain Lions represent us at the North Bay Science Challenge!

Back on campus, we started the month with our Books & Breakfast Reading to celebrate reading in honor of Dr. Seuss (it was his birthday!). We also had a Garden Workday where volunteers and staff cleaned up and beautified our wonderful MV Garden. Our 4th graders also excitedly welcomed some new classmates with their Steelhead Trout eggs, which began to hatch towards the end of the month. We finished the month in style, with staff sporting their Autism Awareness shirts in honor of Autism Awareness month (April).

As we move towards the end of the school year, there is still a lot to do. We are always appreciative of the wonderful support we receive from MV families and we are excited to see you all at our Open House so our staff and students can show off their many accomplishments from this school year! Please make sure to join us on Thursday, April 26th at 6:00pm for this family-friendly event, which includes our PTA silent auction! We hope to see you there!

Safe Routes to Schools Green Sneaker Challenge

The Green Sneaker Challenge is starting! Students will receive a Green Sneaker Challenge card to attach to their backpack where they can earn a stamp for walking or biking to school on our Walk & Roll days of April 10th, 17th, 24th, and May 1st. On the last day of the challenge, students will turn in their cards and become eligible to win our raffle prize of 2 tickets to the Charles Schulz Museum! (If you want to participate, but live to far away to walk, you can park a few blocks away from school and walk from there to qualify).

Yearbooks

Monte Vista's 2017-2018 Yearbooks are on sale now! You can buy yours on-line at the link below. Yearbooks will be delivered at the end of the school year.

Parking Lot Safety & School Rules

Please remember to continue being extra careful in the parking lots around pick-up and drop-off times. Use crosswalks and sidewalks when walking, follow parking lot and street signs, and leave extra time so you are not in a rush.

Please remind students to continue to follow school rules, including not bringing toys (this includes Pokemon cards) to campus. We ask that all students follow the lifeskills, treat each other with kindness, and always make sure their actions are safe, respectful, and responsible.

School Safety

Since our last Paw Press, we completed a Lockdown Drill on campus. Students were prepared for this practice and the drill was very successful. Throughout the year, we participate in a rotation of emergency drills including fire, earthquake, evacuation and lockdown. It is important to have practice drills for a variety of occurrences so that students become familiar with procedures and can react quickly if ever needed. We continue to be committed to the safety of our students. If you ever have specific questions regarding school safety, feel free to contact your child's teacher or Ms. Fountain.

Last Day of School

When we sent home student handbooks at the beginning of the school year, we realized there was a typo on the date for our last day of school. Please mark your calendars that June 1 is the last day of school for the 2017-2018 school year.

District Meetings

There are two important district meetings coming up that all are welcome to attend! Our District Wellness Committee will be meeting on April 11 at 3:45 in L-1 at TMS. We also have our District English Language Advisory Committee (DELAC) meeting on April 18th from 5:30-6:30 in L-1 at TMS.

Now Enrolling!

Monte Vista is currently enrolling students for the 2018-2019 school year for all grades. Any families with a youngster out there who will be in Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten next year, please come enroll now!
