UTSC Leadership Team Weekly

Compassionate Accountability
I'd like to take the next few newsletters to understand the concept. If you want to dig deeper, I suggest reading the articles and or research and books by Nate Regier and other authors.
- Believes rules, consequences, and expectations are sufficient motivators of behavior.
- Avoids listening.
- Views empathy as a sign of weakness.
- Common philosophy includes, “Failure is not an option,” “High expectations are necessary,” “Sometimes you have to show them who’s boss.”
- Results in low morale and trust, and a leader who is feared but not respected.
- Compliance without loyalty.
Compassion Without Accountability
- Believes listening, consensus, and empathy are sufficient motivators of behavior.
- Avoids asking directly for things.
- Views confronting negative behavior as uncaring and mean.
- Common philosophy includes, “Be nice,” “Don’t hurt other people’s feelings,” “Put yourself in her shoes,” “Don’t raise your voice.”
- Results in poor follow-through, low confidence that goals will be accomplished, and a leader who is liked but not respected.
- Agreement without commitment.

An example might run like this:
- Ask the question: Ok, everyone let’s see. What’s a good way to work out 12 x 17?
- Give thinking time: (No hands up, no calling out; scan the room as they think, keeping the focus)
- Select someone to respond: Right, so Kelly what were you thinking? (warm, invitational). “I think it’s 204.”
- Respond to the answers. Yes, that’s the right answer. What was your method? “I did 10 x 17 and then 2 x 17 and added them up”
- Select and another student: Great. And Abdi what about you. What method did you use? “I did 10 x 12 makes 120 7 x 12 is 84 and then add them for 204”. Well done – how does that compare to Kelly’s answer?
